Women's Basketball Close Out Regular Season At Home

March 4, 2003

Game Backdrop: Stony Brook returns home for its final two games of the regular season, facing Albany in Wednesday's contest. The Seawolves come off a tough 70-67 overtime setback at New Hampshire, while the Great Danes look to snap a five-game losing skid.

About the Great Danes: Albany suffered its fifth straight loss on Saturday with a 75-58 loss at Vermont. The setback eliminated Albany from the America East Tournament. The Great Danes led 26-24 with 3:57 remaining in the first half before the Catamounts went on a 9-4 run to close out the half. Vermont hit three consecutive three pointers and entered halftime with a 33-30 advantage. Vermont led by only 43-40 with 13:50 left in regulation before scoring 13 of the game's next 17 points to increase its lead to 56-44 at the 8:02 mark. The Great Danes closed the gap to eight with 5:13 remaining on a lay up by Danielle Hutcheson, who scored a season-high 20 points and added nine rebounds, to make the score 60-52. Albany wouldn't get any closer as Vermont pulled away over the final minutes. Jess McGinlay was Albany's only other player in double figures with 10 points.

Series History: Stony Brook leads the all-time series 14-12 and has won the last four meetings.

Injury Update: Forward Malica Jibowu returned last weekend after missing one game with a knee injury. Center Meghan Barrett also remains sidelined. She has not practiced since Dec. 30 due to ankle problems and is out indefinitely.

Last Meeting - Jan. 18, 2003: Sherry Jordan scored 31 points and added a career-high 17 rebounds as Stony Brook defeated Albany 74-58 at the Recreation and Convocation Center. Albany trailed 25-24 with 5:24 remaining in the first half, but Jordan sparked a 10-4 run to close the half as she connected on a fadeaway three-pointer as the shot clock ran down. Jordan also connected on four free throws during that stretch to give Stony Brook a 35-28 halftime advantage. The Seawolves continued their surge at the start of the second half tallying 12 of the first 16 points to build a 47-32 lead with 13:05 left. Bojana Bogetic scored five of her career-high 21 points during the run. The Great Danes battled back with an 11-4 spurt that cut the deficit to 62-54 with 3:54 left. Jordan, who connected on 12-of-18 field goals, scored six of the game's next eight points on two jump shots and a fast break lay up off a steal, as Stony Brook closed the game on a 12-4 run. Albany's Danielle Hutcheson scored a team-high 16 points and had 10 rebounds.

Hoping for a Repeat: The last time Stony Brook and Albany faced each other, Sherry Jordan and Bojana Bogetic each had a career day. Jordan netted a career-best 31 points on 12-of-18 shooting and added 17 boards, which was also a career-best until last weekend. Bogetic scored a career-high 21 points and shot 10-of-17 from the field against the Great Danes in January.

Monster on the Boards: Sherry Jordan certainly made her presence known against New Hampshire with a career-high 20 rebounds. She also netted 22 points for her fourth double-double of the season. Jordan never left the floor, playing all 45 minutes. In eight games this season, Jordan has been the team's leading scorer and rebounder, including a stretch of five straight games.

Dynamic DeGiorgio: Danielle DeGiorgio also had a solid effort against UNH with 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting and nine rebounds. It marked the fourth time in five games she has tallied double figures.

T Lo Ignites: Theresa LoParrino enjoyed her best outing of the season against New Hampshire, playing a huge role in Stony Brook's second-half comeback. All of her season-high 16 points came after halftime and she hit 4-of-9 three-pointers. Down 51-46 at the 7:10 mark, LoParrino drained back-to-back threes to give the Seawolves a 52-51 edge, their first lead since Danielle DeGiorgio's game-opening basket. It was also LoParrino who hit a layup to tied the game at 62-62 and force overtime.

First Time Overtime: Stony Brook's game against New Hampshire marked the first overtime contest in the Seawolves' four years at the Division I level. The last time Stony Brook was forced into an extra period was during the 1997-98 season, when they overcame Bridgeport in overtime, 64-63. The head coach at the time was Bill Zatulskis.

Home Streak Continues: The Seawolves enter Wednesday's game with four straight wins at the SBU Sports Complex. The Seawolves bounced back after winning just one of their first eight home contests. The last defeat Stony Brook suffered at the SBU Sports Complex came at the hands of Maine, which earned a 66-41 victory on Jan. 25.

Jordan Watch: Sherry Jordan remains in the No. 7 spot on the all-time scoring list with her 22 points against Binghamton. Jordan now has 1,240 career points and has quite an obstacle to reach the No. 6 spot. She needs 92 points to pass Joan Gandolf, who tallied 1,331 points from 1990-94.

On the Rebound: Led by an outstanding effort from Sherry Jordan, the Seawolves broke their string of five straight games with fewer rebounds than the opponent. Jordan hauled down 20 boards as Stony Brook recorded a 47-45 edge on the boards. It marked the 11th game this year that the Seawolves have held the edge in that category, including five of their eight victories with its most decisive performance against Hartford on Jan. 8. SBU finished with 48 rebounds compared to just 28 for the Hawks, as Sherry Jordan collected a game-high 15 to lead the way.

Last Time Out: Lindsay Adams led all five starters in double figures with 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team to a 70-67 overtime victory over Stony Brook in Lundholm Gymnasium. Maren Matthias notched her school-record 13th double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 boards. UNH took a 68-63 lead in the extra session when Livingston sank a pair of free throws with 1:55 left. Stony Brook pulled to within 70-67 but misfired on two three-point attempts. Matthias was fouled on the rebound, but missed both free throws with 8.8 seconds to go. The Seawolves inbounded the ball and Sherry Jordan drove the length of the court, missing a shot underneath as time expired. New Hampshire, which had built a 34-26 halftime lead after hitting seven three-pointers for its first seven field goals, took a 49-38 lead with 13:32 to go in regulation. The Seawolves fought back and went on an 18-2 run to take a 56-51 lead with 4:44 to play. UNH countered with a run of its own, outscoring Stony Brook 11-4 to take a 62-60 lead with 49 seconds to go. Theresa LoParrino's layup with 23 ticks on the clock tied the game at 62, and UNH misfired on two potential gamewinners.

Looking Ahead: The Seawolves play host to Vermont in the regular season finale on Saturday at 2 p.m. Senior Malica Jibowu will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
