Women's Basketball Faces Vermont In Home Finale

March 7, 2003

Game Backdrop: Stony Brook looks to close out its regular season in style as the Seawolves play host to Vermont in the regular season and home finale. The only senior on this year's team, Malica Jibowu, will be honored in a pregame ceremony. Vermont nearly handed Maine its first loss in conference play on Wednesday, but came away with a two-point loss.

About the Catamounts: Vermont's 54-52 loss to Maine at home last week snapped a nine-game winning streak against league opponents and marked just the second loss this year on UVM's home floor. The Black Bears' Kim Corbitt hit the gamewinner with just 2.5 seconds to go to preserve Maine's undefeated America East record. Despite the loss, Vermont held the Black Bears to a season-low 54 points and outrebounded them 42-38. UVM, which will enter next weekend's conference tournament as the No. 2 seed, is led by Morgan Hall's18.3 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. Aaron Yantzi contributes 14.9 points and 5.7 rebounds per game for the Catamounts.

Series History: Vermont leads the all-time series 3-0.

Injury Update: Guard Kelly McManus will be available after missing Wednesday's game with a facial injury. Center Meghan Barrett, who has been sidelined since December due to ankle problems, has seen limited action in practice but will not be available for Saturday's game.

Last Meeting - Feb. 8, 2003: Senior Dawn Cressman scored a team-high 15 points, grabbed nine rebounds and handed out five assists to lead Vermont past visiting Stony Brook, 83-58, in the Catamounts' biggest league victory of the season. Vermont jumped out to a 9-0 lead to start the game and never looked back. A three-pointer by Cressman at 10:58 gave UVM a 20-6 lead. Stony Brook would put together a 6-0 spurt to close the game to five points, 24-19 with 6:02 left in the first half, but that's as close as the Seawolves would get the remainder of the game. The Catamounts lead grew to as many as 28 in the second half. UVM was relentless on the boards, outrebounding Stony Brook 55-29 overall and 23-12 on the offensive glass. Sophomores Lani Boardman and Katie McNamara chipped in 14 points each. Boardman also grabbed eight rebounds and McNamara collected seven boards. Junior Aaron Yantzi added eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Stony Brook, playing with just seven players, was led by junior Sherry Jordan's 16 points and eight rebounds. Bojana Bogetic added 15 points and Stephanie Barlett chipped in 12 points.

Unlucky 13: Danyelle Ingram had an outstanding game against Albany on Wednesday and nearly went down in history for her perfomance. She nailed her first 13 shots--just one short of qualifying for the NCAA's all-time list of best shooting performance. The record belongs to Kelly Mago of Southwest Missouri State, who went 16-of-16 against Bradley on Feb. 18, 1988. One record Ingram did achieve was the best shooting performance in Stony Brook women's basketball history.

Danyelle Dominates: Ingram took over for the Seawolves against Albany, helping Stony Brook lead by as many as 22 points in the first half. Ingram scored 18 points in the first half alone and ended up with 29 for the game, a new career-high. She also grabbed five rebounds and had four assists.

More Like Rodman Than Jordan: Sherry Jordan's rebounding performance in the past two games has been nothing short of remarkable. The junior has pulled down 39 rebounds in the past two games combined, including 19 in Wednesday's game against Albany. Jordan had 11 boards by halftime against the Great Danes. In the Seawolves' previous game against New Hampshire, Jordan collected 20 caroms, a career-high. She has totaled 15 or more rebounds on four occasions this season and leads the team with 9.8 per game. Her 10.7 rebounds per game in conference competition leads the league.

Double Trouble: Jordan also notched her second straight double-double and fifth of the season with her 17 points and 19 rebounds. She also collected six assists and four steals for an impressive all-around game.

Home Streak Continues: The Seawolves hope to close the season with six straight victories at the SBU Sports Complex. After winning just one of their first eight home games, Stony Brook bounced back to win five straight. The last defeat Stony Brook suffered at the SBU Sports Complex came at the hands of Maine, which earned a 66-41 victory on Jan. 25.

On the Offensive: Stony Brook's 55.2 percent shooting performance against Albany marked the Seawolves' second-best offensive performance of the season. SBU connected on 32-of-58 field goals for the game. The Seawolves were just a little bit better on Feb. 19 against Hartford, hitting 55.3 percent (26-of-47) of their field goals. The Seawolves were especially lethal in the first half, drilling 14-of-24 shots (58.3 percent). On the season, Stony Brook has shot 50 percent or better five times and have won four of those contests. The Seawolves have shot 40 percent or better on six occasions.

DeGiorgio Against the Danes: Despite a subpar shooting effort (2-of-8) Danielle DeGiorgio had a solid game against the Great Danes. The junior scored eight points and recorded seven rebounds to go along with career-highs of six assists and five steals.

Jordan Watch: Sherry Jordan remains in the No. 7 spot on the all-time scoring list with her 22 points against Binghamton. Jordan now has 1,240 career points and has quite an obstacle to reach the No. 6 spot. She needs 92 points to pass Joan Gandolf, who tallied 1,331 points from 1990-94.

Last Time Out: Stony Brook built a 22-point lead in the first half and held off a late Albany rally to hand the Great Danes an 80-68 loss at the SBU Sports Complex on Wednesday night. Danyelle Ingram's 18 first half points helped Stony Brook take command early. Ingram hit two layups and drilled a jumper to cap a 16-4 run that gave the Seawolves a 31-13 lead at the 10:07 mark. Another Ingram bucket gave Stony Brook its largest lead of the game, 40-18, with 5:50 to go before the break. Two free throws by Akia Booker with no time left on the clock gave Stony Brook a 46-31 halftime advantage. Stony Brook kept it up to open the second half, scoring eight of the first 10 points. However, the Great Danes began to slowly chip away at the lead. Kathryn Hemlock's layup at the 7:57 mark sparked a 14-2 run that sliced the lead to just six points with 4:08 remaining. Bojana Bogetic responded with a layup, and the Seawolves scored eight of the final 12 points of the game to hold off the attempted comeback. Danyelle Ingram led three Seawolves in double figures a career-high 29 while Sherry Jordan hauled down 19 rebounds. Jess McGinlay led three Great Danes in double figures with 24 points, shooting 7-of-17 from three-point territory. Danielle Hutcheson recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Hemlock finished with 10 points and nine assists.

Looking Ahead: Depending on today's results, Stony Brook could enter next week's America East Conference Tournament seeded anywhere from No. 4 to No. 6.
