Hartford Edges Women's Soccer 3-2

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Hartford built a 3-0 lead and held on in the second half to narrowly escape with a 3-2 win over Stony Brook in America East women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon. The loss dropped Stony Brook to 5-5-3, 2-1 in conference play.

Malin Engman put Hartford ahead 1-0 in the 21st minute on a pass from Stephanie Pothier and just over seven minutes later following a Hartford corner kick, Vicki Makkas jumped on the loose ball and fired a shot past goalkeeper Cindy Bennett for a 2-0 lead.

The Hawks extended the lead to 3-0 in the 48th minute when Erin Mucha chipped a pass to Pothier who beat Bennett to the far post.

Stony Brook did not go away and continued to pressure the Hartford goal. Tiffany Fasullo put the Seawolves on the board in the 52nd minute with her third goal in two games, a left-footed shot to the far post and SB cut the lead to 3-1. The Seawolves dominated the rest of the half, outshooting the Hawks 13-3 over the final 40 minutes of the game.

Kristin Mishrell drew Stony Brook within 3-2 in the 89th minute, knocking home a cross from Fasullo. The Seawolves frantically tried for the equalizer but time ran out as Jackie Anthony set up for a shot in the penalty area. The Seawolves outshot Hartford 18-9.

Bennett made five saves for Stony Brook while Liz Cook stopped nine shots for Hartford.

The Seawolves are back in action on Friday when they travel to UMBC. Kick-off is 4 p.m.
