The Stony Brook volleyball team was defeated by Northeastern, 3-1 (28-30, 32-30, 30-27, 30-26), in a hard-fought match on Friday evening in Boston, Mass. With the loss, the Seawolves' record evened at 10-10 overall, 2-2 in the America East, while Northeastern improved to 12-8, 3-1.
Stony Brook started the match well, rallying from a 14-10 deficit to win the opening game. The Seawolves took their first lead at 18-17 on a block from Melissa Votruba and Maria Samilo and eventually prevailed, 30-28, after a back and forth game.
The Seawolves grabbed the advantage early in the second game of the contest and held a commanding 27-21 lead late in the frame before Northeastern put together a 7-0 run to take a 28-27 lead. The Huskies held on for a 32-30 victory to even the match at one game apiece.
In game three, Northeastern used six kills from Whitney Turner and five from Kira Batura to put away the Seawolves 30-27. The two outside hitters teamed up again the fourth and final game as Turner recorded eight kills and Batura notched another five to lead NU to the 30-26 win in game four and seal the victory.
Maria Samilo tallied 13 kills and a career-high 10 block assists while Melissa Votruba led the Seawolves with 16 kills. Danielle MacKnight added 13 kills and Morgan Sweany added a career-best 27 digs. Abby Egan chipped in with 24 digs while Julie Zub and Kate Ruskowski paced the Seawolves' offensive attack with 31 and 16 assists, respectively.
The Seawolves are back in action tomorrow evening when they travel to Hartford to take on the Hawks at 6 p.m.
