Josh Dudash threw for four touchdowns to lift Stony Brook to a 28-10 victory over Wagner on Saturday afternoon at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. With the win, the Seawolves moved into sole possession of second place in the Northeast Conference and will host first place Central Connecticut for the conference title next Saturday.
Wagner (5-5, 2-4 NEC) scored on its first drive of the game as John Sciarra connected with Chris Turner for a seven yard touchdown pass to give the visitors a 7-0 lead with 8:50 to go in the first quarter.
After a failed fourth down attempt by the Seahawks early in the second quarter, the Seawolves (5-4, 4-2 NEC) started on their own 21 yard line. Stony Brook capped the drive with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Dudash to Scott Kubrak. Matt Weeks connected on the extra point to knot the game at seven with 5:55 remaining in the first half.
The SB defense came up big later in the quarter, forcing Wagner to a four-and-out on its next possession. The offense took over, as Dudash led a five-play, 67-yard drive that ended with a Joe Tarasiewicz 18-yard TD reception with 2:06 remaining in the half. Weeks nailed the extra point and the Seawolves took a 14-7 lead into the lockeroom.
Dudash and Tarasiewicz hooked up again on the opening drive of the second half with a three-yard TD pass. Weeks split the uprights and the Seawolves led 21-7 with five minutes to go in the third.
Wagner pulled within 21-10 at the 12:15 mark of the fourth quarter as Piotr Czech drilled a 39-yard field goal.
Stony Brook answered back on their next possession as Dudash threw for his fourth TD of the game, a three-yard pass to Josh Anderson to put SB up 28-10 and put the game out of reach.
Dudash went 15-for-25 for 187 yards in the air to go with four touchdowns. Tarasiewicz pulled in eight passes for a team-high 110 yards and a pair of TD's, while Rod Williams ran for a game-high 77 yards on 16 carries. Daniel Michitsch led the defense with 11 tackles and a sack, while Adam Barzar, Mike Mounter and Francis Rivera each tallied an interception for SB.
Sciarra went 22-for-36 for a game-high 276 yards and a touchdown. Joseph Kinard totalled seven receptions for 111 yards, while Warren Barnett picked up 76 yards on 11 carries for Wagner. Thomas Davis and Ryan Layton each collected nine tackles.
The Seawolves are back in action on Saturday when they host Central Connecticut State for Senior Day beginning at 1:00 p.m. The game will also serve as the final home contest for head coach Sam Kornhauser, who is retiring at the end of the season after 22 seasons at Stony Brook.
