Sweany Leads Seawolves to 3-1 Win Over UMBC

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Four Seawolves ended the match with double-digit kills as the Stony Brook volleyball team defeated UMBC 3-1 (35-33, 30-21, 22-30, 30-16). With the win, SB improves to 10-16 and 4-6 in the America East and moves a half-game up on New Hampshire for the final America East Tournament spot. The loss drops the Retrievers to 10-17 and 3-7 in conference play.

After falling down 11-3 in Game 1, the Seawolves battled back to knot the game at 21-21. The Retrievers held strong and and had two game points after being up 29-27. Stony Brook responded and fought off a total of three UMBC game points before closing the opening game 35-33 off a Retriever error.

Stony Brook found itself in a hole in Game 2, down 5-1. The Seawolves battled back to knot the game at 17-17. SB took control of the game and closed out the second game with a 13-4 run, winning Game 2, 30-21. The Seawolves outhit UMBC .179 to .026 in the second game and Morgan Sweany paced the Seawolf attack with four kills and eight digs.

UMBC rushed out to a 15-10 lead in the third game, before SB closed the gap to two at 16-14. The Retrievers answered with a Sarah Ball kill and did not look back, closing out Game 3, 30-22.

In the fourth, Stony Brook took the lead at 3-2 and did not look back. With the Seawolves leading 19-14, Kate Ruskowski recorded her sixth kill of the match sparking a ten-point run as SB won the fourth game 30-16.

Morgan Sweany and Noelle Bay pitched in double-doubles for the Seawolves, with Sweany knotching 13 kills and 23 digs and Bay adding 12 kills and 15 digs. Amy Oleksiej led the way for the Stony Brook offense, rattling off a match-high 15 kills and Sarah Votruba added 11 kills and three blocks. Ruskowsi gathered 50 assists in the contest and hit for a career-high six kills.

Julia Wood led the way for UMBC recording a team-high 14 kills. Ball added 12 kills and 17 digs and Jessie Folk contributed 11 kills in the loss.

The Seawolves return to action on Friday when they travel to take on America East rival New Hampshire. Only half of a game separates the two teams as they battle for the fourth and final America East playoff spot.
