Dec. 7, 2005

Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook women's basketball team survived a furious second half comeback as the Seawolves stunned No. 19/20 Temple on Wednesday night at the Indoor Sports Complex. With the win, the program's first-ever over a nationally-ranked opponent, the Seawolves improved to 4-2 on the season, while the Owls dropped their second in a row to fall to 6-2.

Leading 28-19 at the break, Stony Brook used a 9-0 run fueled by a four-point play by Mykeema Ford and capped by a Dana Ferraro steal and layup to stretch the lead to 15 at 41-26 just over four minutes into the half.

Temple would chip away at that lead behind Candace Dupree, who netted 10 points in an 18-6 Owl run that cut Stony Brook's advantage back to just three points with 8:27 on the clock.

A pair of three's by Ford and Sidney Orndorff gave the Seawolves some breathing room at 53-45, but the visitors pulled back within two points on a Jennifer Owens jumper with 2:39 left in the contest.

Orndorff connected on a pair of free throws to make it 57-53 20 seconds later, but Temple answered once again as Kamesha Hairston nailed a three-pointer to make it a one point game with 1:32 on the clock.

Orndorff was fouled once again and made the front end of the one-and-one with 21 seconds remaining, setting up one final possession for Temple. Stony Brook's defense forced two Owl timeouts, leaving just over six seconds on the clock. Ashley Morris threw up a desperation three at the buzzer but it was off the mark, giving the Seawolves the 58-56 victory.

Jessica Smith netted 17 of her team-high 21 points in the first half, while Ford finished with 17 points and a game-high five assists. Orndorff added 11 points while Ferraro extended her double-figures rebounding streak to seven games dating back to last year with 10 boards.

Dupree led the Owls with game-highs of 23 points, 16 rebounds and three blocks, while Owens netted 13 points and Lady Comfort chipped in with 11.

The Seawolves are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Washington, D.C., to take on George Washington. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
