Box Score

Santa Barbara, Calif. - The Stony Brook baseball team jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead but could not muster another offensive attack the rest of the day, falling 4-2 at UC Santa Barbara on Monday afternoon. With the loss, the Seawolves fall to 5-9 on the season while UCSB evens its record at 11-11.

The Seawolves put together a two-out rally to take an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Matt Devins drew a walk and advanced to second base on a wild pitch before Isidro Fortuna plated him with an RBI double for the first run of the game. Fortuna came around to score one batter later as Tom Pennino singled to left, but that would be all the Seawolves offense on the afternoon as they were held hitless for the final five innings of the ballgame.

UC Santa Barbara chipped away at the Stony Brook lead, cutting the lead in half in the bottom of the second inning on a solo home run by Matt Wilkerson, and took the lead for good on a pair of RBI singles by David Figoni and Chris Malec in the bottom of the third. Matt Aidem added an RBI single of his own in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the Gauchos a 4-2 advantage. The bats on both sides fell silent from that point on as Matt Lyons came in to shut Santa Barbara down in the rest of the way, striking out four and allowing just one hit in three scoreless innings of work.

Brian Murtagh (1-1) took the loss after allowing four runs, all earned, on seven hits and four walks in five innings on the mound. The Seawolves posted five hits on the afternoon, highlighted by Fortuna and Pennino's RBI knocks in the first.

Steve Morlock (2-4) threw four innings to pick up the win while Figoni went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI to lead the Gauchos at the plate.

Stony Brook is back in action tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. (Pacific Time) when it faces Cal State Northridge in the first game of a two-game series against the Matadors.
