Princeton, N.J. -
Brian Murtagh threw a complete game six-hitter to lead the Stony Brook baseball team to a 7-2 victory in Game 2 of the Seawolves doubleheader with Princeton on Friday afternoon. The win snapped a seven-game losing streak by the Seawolves as they lost Game 1 of the twinbill 3-2. With the split, the Seawolves' record stands at 6-12 on the season.
Designated hitter Stephen Didsbury broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh inning of Game 2 with a sacrifice fly and the Seawolves put the game out of reach an inning later with four hits and two walks to take a 7-2 lead, which Murtagh closed out for the first Seawolves win in seven games. Chris Sipp and Didsbury drew bases loaded walks for two of the runs in the inning, while Andrew Larsen plated a run with an RBI single and Jonathan Kalkau opened up the scoring with a sucessful squeeze bunt.
Murtagh (2-1) was excellent on the mound, throwing a six-hitter and allowing just two runs (one earned) while striking out four for his first career complete game. Larsen went 4-for-4 at the plate with a run and an RBI while Didsbury was 2-for-3 with three RBI.
The Seawolves held a 2-0 lead heading into the fifth inning of Game 1, but were unable to keep Princeton off the board as a costly two-out error with a runner aboard was followed by a two-run double by Andrew Salini and an RBI single by Ryan Eldridge as the Tigers plated three unearned runs to take a 3-2 lead with six outs to go in the seven inning affair.
The Seawolves were unable to put anything together offensively after losing the lead as Princeton starter Gavin Fabian (2-1) retired the final six batters in order to pick up the complete game win.
Stony Brook got on the board in the top of the first inning on an RBI double by Matt Devins and took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth on a Devins sacrifice fly that scored Larsen.
Jon Lewis (2-2) suffered the loss despite not giving up an earned run as he scattered eights hits and struck out five in a complete game effort. Devins went 1-for-2 with two RBI to lead the Brook at the plate.
The Seawolves and Tigers will take the field again tomorrow at Princeton for their second doubleheader in as many days. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
