Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Stony Brook used a well-balanced attack to blank Lafayette 3-0 in the second game of the 2005 Holiday Inn Express Men's Soccer Invitational on Friday night at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. The Seawolves are now undefeated in their last five games to improve to 4-1-1, while the Leopards fell to 3-2-0.
The Seawolves got on the board with just over four minutes remaining in the first half as Chris Megaloudis charged up the right side, slipped the ball through the defender's legs and drew Leopard goalkeeper Mike Tortora out of the net. He then sent a pass across the front of the goal and found Chris Scarpati, who fired a shot into the back of the open goal from eight yards out.
Mark Zajkowski gave the Seawolves a 2-0 lead 12:20 into the second half when he headed a Michael Palacio corner kick past Tortora. It was the senior defender's first career goal.
SB added an insurance goal at 75:33 as Douglas Narvarez started a counter attack off a Lafayette free kick, carrying the ball 50 yards before he connected with Palacio who fed Adam Ciklic on the far right side. Ciklic then burried a shot from 15 yards out for a 3-0 Seawolves advantage.
EJ Xikis picked up his third straight win, making three stops while combining with Brian Tepfer for the shutout. Tortora made three saves in the loss for the Leopards.
In the first game of the day, Ed Meyer's goal 16:46 into the contest was all Fairfield (2-1-2) needed to earn a 1-0 shutout of Columbia (2-4-0). Andrew Frankel turned away two shots to earn the victory, while Alex Maffeo made one save in the loss for the Lions.
The tournament resumes on Sunday when Lafayette takes on Fairfield at 4 p.m. and the Seawolves battle Columbia at 6:30 p.m.
