Gulce Nazli Dikecligil and Morgan Sweany each totaled 17 kills as the Stony Brook volleyball team defeated New Hampshire, 3-1, in the Seawolves America East Conference opener. With the win the Seawolves improve to 8-10 on the year and 1-0 in conference. The loss drops the Wildcats to 4-11 overall and 0-2 in America East play.
In the opening game, the Seawolves rushed out to 11-2 lead after Megan Roehl tallied three consecutive service aces, forcing the Wildcats to call a timeout. The Seawolves built their lead to 22-10 before UNH mounted its comeback. The Wildcats went on a 19-7 run to tie the game up at 29-29. Dikecligil came up with the clutch kill and then closed out the game with a service ace as Stony Brook won Game 1, 31-29.
Stony Brook grabbed control of Game 2 early and opened up an 18-11 lead. Following a UNH service error, the Seawolves closed out Game 2, 30-16, off of a Sweany kill.
The Wildcats came out of the break revitalized. Kate Uitti took over the setting duties and led UNH to an early 21-9 lead. The Seawolves pulled as close as 28-21, but behind an Emmy Blouin kill the Wildcats claimed Game 3, 30-21.
In the fourth game, Stony Brook and UNH battled back and forth until a Jamie Watson service ace handed the Seawolves a 20-18 lead and forced the Wildcats to call a timeout. Stony Brook maintained the lead and closed out the match with a 30-25 win in Game 4 off of a Dikecligil kill.
Dikecligil posted a double-double for Stony Brook, amassing 17 kills and 10 digs, Sweany added 17 kills and eight digs and Amy Oleksiej tallied 11 kills and two blocks. Jessica Graham headed the Stony Brook defense, notching six blocks and Roehl added four.
The Seawolves return to action on Friday, October 6 when they hit the road to take on Albany. The match is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
