Morgan Sweany blasted 25 kills and Gulce Nazli Dikecligil added 19 as the Stony Brook volleyball team rolled to a 3-1 (30-28, 23-30, 32-30, 30-15) win over Binghamton at the Indoor Sports Complex on Friday evening. The Seawolves handed the Bearcats their first conference loss and improve to 10-11 on the season and 3-1 in America East play. Binghamton falls to 8-14 overall and 3-1 in conference.
In the opening game, the Seawolves seized control early as they opened a 15-11 lead on a Megan Roehl service ace. Behind the serving of Dikecligil, Stony Brook was able to expand its lead to seven at 24-17. Binghamton fought back, knotting the game up at 28-28 on a Megan Hoag kill. Following a Binghamton error, Kaitlyn Deutsch took advantage of a free ball and blasted it for the kill, giving the Seawolves a 30-28 win in Game 1.
In Game 2, Binghamton controlled the pace of play and built an early 14-9 lead. Stony Brook fought back, eventually evening the game at 18 points apiece on a Roehl kill. Following a Binghamton timeout, the Bearcats took over the second game, closing out Game 2 on a 12-5 run, 30-23.
In the third game, the Seawolves trailed the entire game before head coach Deb Matejka-DesLauriers called for Noelle Bay off the bench. Bay recharged Stony Brook and the Seawolves took their first lead of the game off of a Bay kill at 24-23. Binghamton held strong, fighting off two game points before the Seawolves closed Game 3 on a Bay kill from Deutsch at 32-30.
With momentum on their side, Stony Brook wasted no time in Game 4, rushing out to an early 11-6 lead and forcing the Bearcats to call a timeout. The Seawolves maintained their momentum and following a pair of Dikecligil aces and a Bay kill, the Seawolves held a 16-9 advantage. The Seawolves hit .548 in the fourth game and closed out the match on a 14-6 run, winning 30-15.
The win snapped Stony Brook's five game losing streak to the Bearcats.
Sweany paced the Stony Brook offense, hitting for 25 kills and 18 digs. Dikecligil added a double-double as the sophomore outside hitter totaled 19 kills, 20 digs and five service aces. Bay provided the spark plug off the bench as she hit .500 with eight kills. Claire Lindner posted a match-high 28 kills and Deutsch added 50 assists in the win.
The Seawolves return to action on Sunday, October 15 when they take on Hartford at 1:00 p.m.
