Volleyball Edged By UMBC 3-2

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Despite double-digit kills from four different Seawolves the Stony Brook volleyball team could not thwart the UMBC comeback as it fell 3-2 (29-31, 30-28, 23-30, 30-18, 16-14) on Sunday afternoon. The loss drops the Seawolves to 12-14 overall and 5-4 in America East play. The Retrievers improve to 12-13 overall and 5-4 in conference play.

In the opening game the two teams played a tight game until the Seawolves were able to open up a 12-7 lead behind the serve of Noelle Bay. UMBC held strong despite trailing by as many as six at 23-17 and eventually knotted the game up at 29-29. Following a Retriever service error, Amy Oleksiej served out the game as the Seawolves claimed Game 1, 31-29.

Game 2 was another close game and neither team led by more than four points. Stony Brook held its biggest lead of the game at 24-20 on a UMBC error. The Retrievers battled back to even the game at 28-28 on a Seawolf service error. Following a pair of Stony Brook attack errors the Retrievers evened the match as they won Game 2, 30-28.

Stony Brook came out of the break with a new energy and dominated Game 3. After trailing early by as many as four points, the Seawolves rallied to take their first lead of the game at 18-17 off of a Bay kill. Stony Brook maintained its momentum behind three service aces from Kelli Sams as they won Game 3, 30-23.

In the fourth game, Stony Brook rushed out to a quick 9-6 lead off of a Kaitlyn Deutsch kill. The Retrievers battled back and built a four point lead at 18-14 off of a Sarah Ball and Ashley Hargrove block to force the Seawolves to call a timeout. The Retrievers continued to roll in Game 4 and closed it out on a 12-4 run to win the game 30-18.

In the fifth and decisive game Stony Brook seemed in control early on. The Seawolves built a four point lead at 10-6 off of an Oleksiej kill. The Retriever went on a 4-0 run to tie the game at 10-10 behind an Ashley Oscars kill. The two teams traded points until Stony Brook earned a match-point at 14-13. UMBC called a timeout and Sarah Fillmore came up with a match-saving kill to even the game back at 14-14. Jessie Folk served out two straight points and clinched the match when her serve clipped the tape and fell to the court for the ace as UMBC won Game 5, 16-14.

Morgan Sweany led the Stony Brook attack with 24 kills and seven digs, Bay added 17 kills and 15 digs, Gulce Nazli Dikecligil totaled 15 kills and 17 digs and Oleksiej tallied 11 kills in the loss.

The Seawolves return to action when they hit the road to take on Binghamton on Friday, November 3. The match is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
