Seawolves Hold On For 71-69 Win Over Yale

Chicago, Ill. - Yale got as close as 60-59 with 5:11 remaining but the Stony Brook University women's basketball team held on for a gritty, 71-69 win over the Bulldogs in the consolation game of the DePaul Invitational hosted by DePaul University in Chicago, Ill. on Saturday night. The Seawolves get their first win of the season and are now 1-2. Yale falls to 0-3 on the season.

Stony Brook showed its defensive intensity early on as the team held Yale to just 10 points in the first ten minutes of the game. The Seawolves jumped out to an early 30-16 lead and had a lead of 14, four times in the first half. Stony Brook had a 40-35 lead going into the locker room as both teams shot 11-22 from the field in the first half.

The Seawolves maintained a lead for most of the second half enjoying a 10-point lead after Mykeema Ford's layup with 12:48 left in the game. However, Yale fought back, going on a quick 6-0 run to cut the lead to four. Yale got within one point late at 60-59 but weren't able to go ahead.

Jessica Smith and Cheri Davis each had 12 points, leading the way for the Seawolves. Leah Getz and Ford had 11 and Delicia Jernigan chipped in 10.

The Seawolves forced 31 Yale turnovers and shot 24-32 from the free throw line including 18-20 in the first half.

Stony Brook took an 8-6 lead with 16:18 remaining in the first half which it never relinquished.

Chineye Okafor led the way for Yale with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Melissa Colborne and Erica Davis each had 12 as Yale also had five scorers in double figures.
