Jessica Smith tallied her second double-double of the season but the Seawovles committed 23 turnovers as they fell to No. 20/21 George Washington, 68-55, on Saturday afternoon at the SBU Sports Complex. With the loss Stony Brook falls to 2-3 on the year and the Colonials improve to 7-1.
"You can't beat a good team when you turn the ball over as much as we did," said head coach Maura McHugh. "You have to credit the deffensive pressure of George Washington but there is no excuse for over 20 turnovers."
Smith's layup with 7:57 to play in the opening half gave the Seawolves a nine point advantage at 27-18. On the next possesion with 7:33 to play Smith picked up her second personal foul of the half and was forced to sit. Aly Young snapped an over four minute scoring drought for the Seawolves when she connected on a jumper but the Colonials closed out the first half with a 13-2 run to give them a two-point advantage at 31-29 heading into the locker room.
Stony Brook could not get any closer than two points and George Washington led by as many as 18 in the second half as they closed out the game 68-55.
Smith led the way for the Seawolves with 23 points and 12 rebounds en route to being named America East Player of the Game, Mykeema Ford scored 14 and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe and Young had her best game in a Seawolf uniform as the transfer tallied nine points, nine rebounds and five steals.
Kenan Cole (13), Sarah-Jo Lawrence (13), Kimberly Beck (12) and Jessica Adair (12) led the balanced George Washington attack.
The Seawolves return to action on Wednesday, December 6 when they travel to take on Temple. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
