Central Connecticut Edges Women's Soccer, 1-0

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Jessica McCavanaugh finished a rebound shot in the 79th minute to lead Central Connecticut past the Stony Brook University women's soccer team, 1-0, at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on Friday evening.

With the loss, Stony Brook falls to 2-1 on the season while Central Connecticut picks up its first win of the season and moves to 1-2.

The Seawolves had two golden opportunities in the first half as Kelly Bahnsen and Brooke Barbuto each had chances in the 18-yard box but were unable to finish.

McCavanaugh broke free on a counter-attack breakaway and had her initial shot saved by Seawolf keeper Marisa Viola. The ball rebounded back to McCavanaugh who finished the ball into the back of the net.

Stony Brook controlled the contest outshooting its opponents 13-11 and holding a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks.

Viola was terrific in net for the hosts, coming up with a career-best eight saves. Her counterpart, Erin Herd, made nine saves for the Blue Devils.

The Seawolves hit the road for their next game when they travel to take on Wagner on Sunday, September 3. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
