Paced by 20-plus kill performances by Morgan Sweany and Gulce Nazli Dikecligil, the Stony Brook University volleyball team outlasted St. Francis (Pa.), 3-2, in the first day of the St. Francis Red Flash Invitational on Friday evening.
With the win, the Seawolves improve to 6-9 on the season.
Stony Brook captured the opening game in commanding fashion by a score of 30-22. Both teams came out even as the score was tied at five apiece. The Seawolves the took advantage of several Red Flash mistakes, raising their lead to 17-10. Stony Brook closed the game on a 7-2 run which was brought on by five St. Francis errors.
In the second game, both teams went back and forth trading leads throughout the game. With the score knotted at 29, the Red Flash took control after an Amy Oleksiej hitting error and a kill by Linda Dolansky tied the contest at one game apiece.
The Seawolves rallied to win the third game by a score of 31-29 as they found themselves in a similar situation to Game 2. The Red Flash tied the game at 29, however, the Seawolves would not be denied as kills from Sweany and Dikecligil gave the Seawolves a 2-1 advantage.
The host squad rallied back in the fourth game, taking the game by a score of 31-29. For the third game in a row, the teams were knotted at 29 before an attack error by Sweany and a kill from Jamie Papini forced a fifth and decisive game.
Stony Brook shot out of the gate in the fifth and final game in which Stony Brook won 15-5. With the score tied at three, a kill from Dikecligil sparked the Seawolves a 12-2 run to end the game.
Sweany was unstoppable in the game as she recorded 24 kills at a .327 clip while making 24 digs. Dikecligil added 21 kills and 15 digs. Kaitlyn Deutsch orchestrated the offense with 67 assists. The Seawolves offense continued to get better each game as their hitting percentage improved throughout the contest. Hitting just .098 in the first game, Stony Brook finished the fifth game hitting .400 and completed the match with a .242 percentage.
The Seawolves continue play tomorrow when they take on Princeton at 11 a.m. and Coppin State at 4:00 p.m.
