The Stony Brook University men's soccer team scored first but was unable to hang on as the Seawolves dropped a 2-1 decision Sunday afternoon to Hofstra in Hempstead, N.Y.
With the loss, the Seawolves slip to 0-3 this season while Hofstra improves to 2-2.
After an uneventful first 14 minutes, the two teams exploded for three goals in a span of 4:13 which would prove to be the only scoring of the match.
Stony Brook opened the scoring at the 14:40 mark after a Hofstra turnover in the midfield area. Junior Michael Palacio settled the ball and passed ahead to forward Adam Ciklic, who gathered it in and blasted an 18-yard shot into the lower right corner.
Hofstra struck right back off the kickoff 23 seconds later. The Seawolves were unable to clear the back and Jamal Neptune headed the ball back into the center of the penalty area from the left sideline. Michael Todd cut across the field and one-timed a shot that tucked inside the right post to tie the game at one goal a piece.
The Pride then took its first lead at the 18:53 mark on the first collegiate goal for Richard Martinez. Martinez gathered the ball off a cross from the left side of the field with his back to the goal, spun, and tucked a shot into the left side of the net to give Hofstra a 2-1 lead.
The Seawolves played a man down the final 30 minutes of the game after Zach Norwood was given a red card and was ejected from the contest.
E.J. Xikis had five saves in the net for the Seawolves and was peppered with 17 shots in the game. Stony Brook managed just four shots on the afternoon.
Stony Brook looks to claim its first win of the 2006 campaign when the Seawolves play their home opener against Iona on Tuesday, September 5. Kick-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
