Stony Brook held a Richmond offense that was averaging 465 yards per game to just 89 in the first half, but the Spiders scored 21 third-quarter points to break the game open as they took a 42-0 win in non-conference football action. Senior Josh Dudash (Beachwood, N.J.) threw for 200 yards and sophomore Conte Cuttino (Uniondale, N.Y.) ran for 76 yards to lead the Seawolves.
Things did not go Stony Brook's way early on when its first drive was stopped and Richmond's Derek Hatcher returned the punt 66 yards for a score 1:35 into the game.
Stony Brook's defense did its job in the first quarter against a high-powered Richmond offense, limiting the Spiders to just 14 yards on nine plays in the quarter. The Seawolf offense came up with 74 yards, but no points as the quarter came to an end with UR holding on to its 7-0 lead.
Richmond running back Tim Hightower, who came into the contest averaging 180 yards a game, put the Spiders up by 14 in the middle of the second quarter when he capped off a UR drive with a 38-yard scoring run. Hightower finished the game with 101 yards on 19 carries.
Stony Brook gained 118 yards in the second quarter, with Dudash throwing for 140 yards, but the Seawolves could not get themselves in scoring position as the half closed with the score still 14-0.
After scoring just seven points in the first half, the Richmond offense scored on all three of its possessions in the third quarter to gain control of the game. The Spiders started with a pair of 54-yard scoring drives on its first two possessions. On the opening drive it took the Spiders 10 plays to reach the end zone, scoring on an eight-yard pass from Eric Ward to Hightower. Richmond then went 54 yards again on its next drive, with Ward finishing off that one with a three-yard toss to Kevin Grayson in the back of the end zone. Richmond then added an 11-yard scoring pass from Ward to Joe Stewart near the end of the quarter that made it 35-0.
"We played a good first half against them," said head coach Chuck Priore. "We held them to less then 100 yards. But we still have some work to do to get where we want to be."
Dudash completed 26-of-48 passes for his 200 yards, while junior Dwayne Eley (Bowie, Md.) led the receivers with eight catches for 42 yards. J.J. Cox (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) added six receptions for 64 yards.
