Box Score
Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Stony Brook kicked a game-tying field goal with two seconds left and then got a nine-yard scoring run from sophomore Conte Cuttino (Uniondale, N.Y.) in the second overtime as the Seawolves took a thrilling 30-23 overtime Homecoming win over Maine. After Cuttino's run senior Chris Brevi (Tampa, Fla.) intercepted a Maine pass to clinch the win for Stony Brook.
Maine (1-6, 0-4 CAA) put Stony Brook in a 10-0 hole early in the second quarter when quarterback Adam Farkes hit Landis Williams for a 50-yard scoring play at the 13:41 mark. Midway through the quarter Stony Brook (4-4) put together its best drive of the game to that time, driving 80 yards to pick up its first score of the game. Facing a fourth and one on the Maine 25, Cuttino took the direct snap and broke through the Maine defense up the middle for the score.
After stopping the Black Bears on their next drive, Stony Brook took over on its own five with three minutes left in the half. On the second play of the drive senior Josh Dudash (Beachwood, N.J.) hit fellow senior J.J. Cox (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) for a key 33-yard play. The Seawolves continued to drive down the field, getting down to the Maine seven with 10 second left from where junior Luke Gaddis (East Patchouge, N.Y.) booted a 24-yard field goal to tie the game.
The second half proved to be almost a duplicate of the first. Maine scored on its first possession of the half, getting into the end zone on a 49-yard pass from Farkes to Jhamal Fluellen four minutes into the half. The Black Bears then tacked on a 25-yard field goal by Bobby Donnelly early in the fourth to go up 20-10.
Stony Brook answered on its next possession, going 72 yards in 10 plays. The key play on the drive came when Dudash hit junior Dwayne Eley (Bowie, Md.) with a 20-yard pass that took the ball down to the Maine three. On the next play Cuttino took it in and the Seawolves were back to within three.
Junior Mike McCoy (Los Angeles, Calif.) stopped the next Maine drive on its second play, picking off a pass and returning it to the Stony Brook 48. The Seawolves drove down to the Maine eight-yard line, but Gaddis' attempt to tie the game was wide right. The SBU defense did its job, forcing a Maine three-and-out.
A short, 25-yard Black Bear punt gave Stony Brook the ball back at midfield with 46 seconds left. Facing a fourth and one on the Maine 41, Dudash hit Eley for a 19-yard gain. After an incomplete pass, Gaddis came on and this time nailed a 40-yard attempt that tied the game.
In the first overtime both teams had to settle for field goals on their first possessions. On its second Stony Brook got a nine-yard Dudash to junior Lynell Suggs (Bronx, N.Y.) play and then consecutive runs of seven and nine yards from Cuttino, the second a TD run that put the Seawolves in the lead for the first time in the game. Brevi then put the game in the win column for Stony Brook with his diving interception of a Farkes pass on Maine's second play on its second drive.
We played very well in the second and fourth quarters," said head coach Chuck Priore. "We put ourselves in a position to win the game in the fourth and we got the job done in overtime."
Cuttino gained his 171 yards on 32 carries, averaging 5.3 yards a carry. Dudash finished with 222 yards on 21-of-32 passing with no interceptions. Suggs led the Stony Brook receivers with 78 yards on seven catches. For Maine, Fluellen gained 129 yards on the ground. Stony Brook out gained Maine, 451 yards to 343.
The game also marked the first overtime contest in the history of Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium which was opened in 2002.
