STONY BROOK, N.Y. -Stony Brook snuffed out an early Bryant scoring chance with an interception and scored touchdowns on its first two possessions as the Seawolves blanked the Bulldogs, 30-0. Stony Brook rolled up 458 yards of total offense, 280 on the ground, and limited its opponent to 224 as it remained perfect at home this season with the victory, improving to 5-4 overall.
"Our goal was to play their plays correctly and be efficient during the game," remarked head coach Chuck Priore. "It was a good learning curve for us and with the open date next week we can go back and work on some basics. The nice thing about an off week is that you can go back to basics as opposed to having to rush to prepare a game plan."
Bryant, which came into the game with a 7-0 record, came up with a 75-yard pass play on the second snap of the game when quarterback Charlie Granatell found Sean Bergin open on the right sideline. Bergin got all the way down to the Stony Brook four before senior Chris Brevi (Tampa, Fla.) knocked him out of bounds. On second and goal sophomore Tyler Santucci (New Kensington, Pa.) snuffed out the Bulldog threat, picking off a pass in the end zone and returning it back out to the SBU 20.
Stony Brook's defense never let Bryant back into the red-zone the rest of the game, with the Bulldogs crossing midfield only twice the rest of the way and gaining only 131 yards the rest of the game. It was the first shutout for the Seawolves since blanking Monmouth, 27-0, in 2004.
After gaining control of the ball after the turnover the Stony Brook offense got off to a solid start when sophomore Conte Cuttino (Uniondale, N.Y.) got runs of 20 and 15 yards on the Seawolves first two plays. In all SBU ran on six straight plays, getting down to the Bryant 10 before attempting its first pass of the game. That turned out to be a touchdown when senior Josh Dudash (Beachwood, N.J.) tossed a scoring strike to sophomore Melaquan Saffold (Syracuse, N.Y.) five minutes in.
Stony Brook went 80 yards again on its next possession, taking just four plays and taking advantage of a pair of Bulldog penalties, to score when junior Brandon Mason (Phillipsburg, N.J.) took it over from five yards out to make it 14-0.
The scoreboard did not change again until late in the third when Santucci came up with another big play on defense, bringing down Lindsey Gamble in the end zone for a safety. After receiving the free kick Stony Brook did not waste any time to score again, getting a 43-yard pass play from Dudash to junior Dwayne Eley (Bowie, Md.) on its first play that took the ball down to the Bryant nine. Two plays later Dudash hit junior Lynell Suggs (Bronx, N.Y.) on a fade route that finished a one-minute span that saw SBU put nine points on the board to push its lead to 23-0.
Bryant never mounted a challenge after that and Stony Brook finished off the scoring when Dudash tossed his third scoring pass of the night when he hit Eley for a four-yard scoring strike four minutes into the fourth quarter.
Cuttino finished with 126 yards on just 11 carries, his third 100-yard game over the last four outings, to lead the Stony Brook ground game. Mason added 66 yards while Suggs led the receivers with 56 yards on five catches. Dudash had an efficient night, completing 11 of 16 attempts for 178 yards and three scores.
