Women's Volleyball Takes Down First-Place Binghamton, 3-1

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Senior Morgan Sweany (Mission Viejo, Calif.) tallied a match-high 26 kills and senior Jackie Ahlers (Stony Point, N.Y.) added 21 kills to lead the Stony Brook women's volleyball team to a 3-1 (30-21, 30-18, 22-30, 30-26) victory over first-place Binghamton on Sunday afternoon. Stony Brook goes to 14-7 overall and 2-1 in the America East while the Bearcats fall to 10-13 and 3-1.

Sweany registered an attack percentage of .404 and added 11 digs for the Seawolves who defeated the America East leader for the second straight match. Senior Kaitlyn Deutsch (St. Louis, Mo.) also recorded a double-double with 59 assists and 11 digs for Stony Brook while junior Noelle Bay tallied a match-high 20 digs.

The opening game was close early before the Seawolves scored three straight points, highlighted by kills from Sweany and Ahlers, to take its largest lead of the game at 15-8. Binghamton would close to within three at 20-17 but the Seawolves then went on a 10-4 run, closing the game out on a kill from senior Amy Oleksiej (Coram, N.Y.).

Game two was also close early but with the score 9-7 the Seawolves went on a 10-1 run, highlighted by three kills from Ahlers and two from freshman Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.), to take a 19-8 lead. Binghamton would then score four straight points to close within seven but Stony Brook quickly pushed the lead back up to double-digits and coasted to a 2-0 lead.

Binghamton would not go quietly though; taking a 13-9 lead midway through game three that forced the Seawolves to take timeout. Stony Brook would stay within striking distance at 17-14 but the Bearcats went on a 10-3 run to take their largest lead of the game at 27-17 forcing another Stony Brook timeout. The Bearcats then closed the game out on a kill from Sandra Devito to force a game four.

The teams battled back and forth early in game four but with the score tied at 11 the Seawolves scored four straight points on a service ace and consecutive kills from Ahlers and Deutsch to take a 15-11 advantage it would not relinquish. The Seawolves pushed their lead to up to eight at 23-15 on a Sweany kill but the Bearcats would rally to within three at 26-23 on a service ace. The Seawolves answered with a kill from Ahlers and eventually put the game away on another Sweany kill.

Sandra Devito lead Binghamton with 14 kills while Jacki Kane and Kathleen Schauer added 11 and 10, respectively.

The Seawolves return to action on Friday, October 12, traveling to take on New Hampshire at 7 p.m.
