Seawolves Open Season By Topping Hoyas, 35-28

A rushing attack that would wind up totaling over 300 yards and a couple of key defensive plays were enough to propel Stony Brook to a 35-28 win over Georgetown in the football season opener for both. The Hoyas defense had no answers for a Seawolf attack that totaled 530 yards and scored a touchdown in every quarter. and Conte Cuttino (Uniondale, N.Y.) rushed for 139 yards and Brandon Mason (Phillipsburg, N.J.) added 127 more in his SBU debut while Josh Dudash (Beachwood, N.J.) threw for 201 yards and three scores to lead Stony Brook to the win.

Stony Brook (1-0), which did not have to punt all night, set the tone early by going 69 yards in 13 plays, getting its first score of the season on a six-yard scoring toss from Dudash to Kevin Halonski (Budd Lake, N.J.) at the 5:32 mark of the first. The Seawolf defense then held Georgetown to just one first-down on its first possession and SBU then took over at its own 20 after Chris MacGriff's punt went into the end zone for a touchback.

Again, Stony Brook took the ball and drove steadily down the field against the Georgetown defense. Faced with a third and 11 early in the drive after a penalty, Dudash found Dwayne Eley (Bowie, Md.) open for a 16-yard gain to keep the drive going. Eleven plays later the same duo polished off the drive with another 16-yard strike that put SBU up 14-0.

Georgetown then put together its first scoring drive of the night, going 77 yards to close to within a touchdown after a 13-yard run by Robert Lane. It then became an offensive show, as both teams traded scoring drives. Stony Brook went up 21-7 midway through the second quarter on a Mason four-yard run, but Georgetown stayed close when it came back and got a four-yard scoring run by Matt Bassuener. Stony Brook blocked the point after attempt, however, and held 21-13 lead when it got the ball back with four and a half minutes left in the half.

Stony Brook drove down to the Georgetown one with time winding down, but the Hoya defense stopped Conte on the final play of the half to keep it an eight-point game. Georgetown then took the second half kickoff and drove down to the SBU five where the drive appeared to have stalled. Lining up for a field goal, the Hoyas pulled off a fake and Robert Lane found Nick Parrish open for the score. GU then converted a two-point attempt to tie the score.

Stony Brook wasted no time, picking up two quick first downs on its first possession before facing a fourth and five situation at the GU 26. The Seawolves went for it and Dudash connected with Lynell Suggs (Bronx, N.Y.) for an 11-yard gain and a first down. Four plays later Dudash tossed his third scoring strike of the night, finding Chris Tyler (Rocky Hill, Conn.) in the back of the end zone to put SBU back on top.

After the Stony Brook defense forced a punt on Georgetown's next possession, the Seawolf offense marched down the field again, putting together its longest drive of the night, an 82-yard, 15-play march that put them back up by 14 after Mason took it in from three yards out.

Georgetown was not done, however, and came back with a 90-yard drive that consumed five minutes. The Hoyas picked up a key play on the drive when it faced a third and nine at the SBU 25, but quarterback Matt Bassuener eluded the SBU defense for a 22-yard gain to the three. Kyle Van Fleet then finished off the drive with a scoring run to make it a seven-point game.

Stony Brook ran off most of the clock on its next drive, but missed a 44-yard field goal attempt with a minute to play. Georgetown took over and got the ball out to its own 46, but the Seawolves got a sack from Dominic Chevalier (Pittsburgh, Calif.) and broke up the Hoya's final two pass attempts to preserve the win. It was the first win in three tries for the Seawolves over the Hoyas.

Stony Brook will hit the road for its next game, traveling to Lewisburg, Pa., next week for a meeting with Bucknell.
