No. 6 Youngstown State Upends Stony Brook, 42-6

Sept. 15, 2007

Final Stats

Youngstown, Ohio - Youngstown State scored 21 unanswered points in the second quarter and took advantage of four Stony Brook turnovers as the sixth-ranked Penguins took a 42-6 win over the Seawolves in non-conference football action. All four Stony Brook turnovers took place in the first half when Youngstown State turned three of them into scores as it built a 28-0 halftime lead.

After both teams traded punts to start the game, Youngstown State (2-1) drove 68 yards on its second possession to score the first points of the game. Jabari Scott started the drive with a 29-yard run and finished it with a one-yard plunge to put the Penguins up 7-0. On Stony Brook's next drive senior Josh Dudash (Beachwood, N.J.) was intercepted on the third play of the drive, giving YSU the ball on the Seawolf 34. Just when it seemed the Penguins were going in for another score, redshirt freshman Stephen Schwicke (East Patchogue, N.Y.) reached up and picked off the pass of Tom Zetts at the three and rumbled down the left sideline deep into Penguin territory. But a penalty brought the ball all the way back to the SBU 31. Stony Brook's offense could only manage four yards after the pick, however, and it remained just a seven-point game.

Interceptions continued to plague Stony Brook and on its next two possessions Youngstown State picked off two more passes. Both times the Penguins took the turnovers and converted them into touchdowns on the ensuing drives. Those scores occurred within 31 seconds of each other mid-way through the second quarter and it was suddenly 21-0. With less than two minutes left in the half Youngstown State got its fourth pick and with 26 seconds left Ferlando Williams caught his second TD pass of the game from Zetts, a 15 yarder that made it 28-0 at the half.

Stony Brook regrouped at the half and put together its first scoring drive of the game on its second possession. The Seawolves got a 13-yard pass from Dudash to junior Lynell Suggs (Bronx, N.Y.) to move into Penguin territory for the first time, later taking on a Dudash to senior Kevin Halonski (Budd Lake, N.J.) 17-yard play that took the team into field goal range. The drive stalled, but junior Luke Gaddis (East Patchogue, N.Y.) split the uprights with his 39-yard attempt to put the first points on the board for SBU.

Stony Brook's defense did not allow the Penguins to score a point in the third quarter, holding them to 49 yards of offense on four possessions. On its first drive of the fourth the YSU offense got it going again, taking the ball 66 yards in six plays to go up 35-3 after a 15-yard run by Williams, his third score of the day.

On the ensuing kickoff the ball landed near the SBU 30 where there were no close Seawolves. The Penguins managed to get to the ball first, giving them possession on the SBU 32. From there it took just six plays, all runs by Kevin Smith, for YSU to take it in for another score.

Stony Brook got its biggest play of the game on the first play of its next possession, a 39-yard pass from Dudash to Suggs that put the ball back in YSU territory. Gaddis made that drive pay off as well, booting a 47-yard field goal that tied his own personal and school record for length.

After Youngstown State was held to minus-1 yards on its next drive, Stony Brook drove another 54 yards down the field, but time expired with the Seawolves on the YSU 11 to keep the final score 42-6.

Youngstown State out gained Stony Brook 421-296, but the Seawolves held the edge in the second half by a 188-156. Dudash finished the day going 14-for-33 with the four interceptions, totaling 166 yards. Junior Dwayne Eley (Bowie, Md.) caught five of the balls for 39 yards, with Suggs grabbing three for 63 yards. Sophomore Conte Cuttino (Uniondale, N.Y.) led the ground attack with 45 yards on nine carries.
