Stony Brook Volleyball Captures Second Straight Tournament Title

Lewisburg, Pa. - After sweeping past its opponent in three games on Friday, Stony Brook's volleyball team continued the trend on Saturday as it swept both Radford and host Bucknell to capture the team title at the Bucknell Invitational, its second straight tournament title. The Seawolves defeated the Highlanders by scores of 30-27, 30-21, 30-24 before downing the Bison by scores of 30-21, 30-18, 30-18. The wins made it a season-high four victories in a row for SBU, which improved to 8-6 on the season.

Graduate student Jackie Ahlers (Stony Point, N.Y.) picked up where she left off on Friday, leading Stony Brook with 16 kills and hitting .462 in the win against Radford. She also led the team with four blocks while junior Gluce Nazli Dikecligil (Istanbul, Turkey) added a team best four aces to go with five kills and six digs. Senior Morgan Sweany (Mission Viejo, Calif.) also reached double figures in kills for SBU, adding 14. Senior Amy Oleksiej (Coram, N.Y.) also had a solid match for the Seawolves, hitting .368 on her way to a nine-kill, three-block effort.

Against Bucknell it was Sweany who led Stony Brook in kills, putting away 14 more as she hit .324 and added a pair of aces to her totals. Ahlers was outstanding again as well; hitting .435 and she totaled 13 kills in the match. Junior Noelle Bay (Selden, N.Y.) led the defensive effort for the Seawolves with 15 digs while also leading the team with three aces. Freshman Ashley Headen (Alexandria, Va.) added seven blocks for SBU in the victory while senior setter finished the day by totaling 62 assists and 14 digs over the two matches.

Ahlers finished the tournament with a .422 hitting percentage, racking up 47 kills, eight blocks and four aces as she was named to the all-tournament team for a third time this season. Sweany also earned all-tournament honors with her 44 kill, four aces and 20-dig performance. Bay was named the tournament's top libero, totaling 41 digs while also leading the team with seven aces.
