Volleyball Takes Fifth Straight with Four-Game Win at Brown

Providence, R.I. - Stony Brook's volleyball team made it five straight tonight when the Seawolves opened play at the Brown Invitational with a four-game win over the host Bears. Stony Brook took the games by scores of 30-25, 26-30, 30-28, 30-25 to improve to 9-6 on the season. Senior Morgan Sweany (Mission Viejo, Calif.) recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 18 kills and 14 digs while graduate student Jackie Ahlers (Stony Point, N.Y.) hit .325 with 17 kills to lead SBU to the win.

In the first game Stony Brook to a five-point lead at 18-13 after an ace from junior Gluce Nazli Dikecligil (Istanbul, Turkey) and then extended it to seven after a kill from freshman Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.) made it 26-19. Brown (1-6) scored cut the lead in half with three straight but could not come all the way back as the Seawolves went on to win the game on a block from senior Kaitlyn Deutsch (St. Louis, Mo.) and junior Jessica Graham (Eastport, N.Y.).

Brown got back into the match in game two, breaking a 19-all tie with four straight points, including an ace from Katie Lapinski. Stony Brook got back to within in two on an ace from junior Noelle Bay (Selden, N.Y.) but could not get closer as the Bears went on to tie the match at a game apiece.

Stony Brook found itself in a 13-9 hole in game three, but responded by winning seven of the next eight points, with Nelson getting a kill and back-to-back aces in the stretch. The Seawolves held the lead the rest of the way, but it was close, with Brown never more than four points away. The Bears held off one game point and crept to within one at 29-28, but Sweany put away one of her four kills in the game to put it in the win column for SBU.

Sweany served up consecutive aces in the fourth game that enabled SBU to pull out to a 12-8 lead. Aided by a pair of Lyndse Yess, Brown came back to take nine of the next 12 to go ahead 18-15. A block from Nelson and freshman Ashley Headen (Alexandria, Va.) reversed the trend for SBU, starting a 6-0 run for the Seawolves. Brown was unable to put together back-to-back points after that and Stony Brook went on to take the victory, getting a kill from Nelson to end it.

Nelson reached double figures in kills for the first time in her career for Stony Brook, finishing with 13. Senior Amy Oleksiej (Coram, N.Y.) added 10 kills and a team-high four blocks. Bay led the defense with 15 digs, with Deutsch adding 14 to go with her 53 assists. Megan Toman led Brown with 17 kills.
