Stony Brook Volleyball Sweeps Past Fairfield

Sept. 7, 2007

Box Score

South Orange, N.J. - Stony Brook's volleyball team got back into the win column tonight, sweeping past Fairfield in three games in the opening match at the Seton Hall Invitational. The Seawolves took the games by scores of 30-23, 30-24 and 30-23. Senior Morgan Sweany (Mission Viejo, Calif.) recorded a double-double of 13 kills and a team-high 16 digs to help Stony Brook to the victory.

Stony Brook (4-5) used a similar script in all three games to come up with the win. The Seawolves pulled away from Fairfield (1-8) midway through each game to pick up the wins and the match. In game one SBU trailed by three early, but a pair of aces from Sweany sparked the Seawolves to an 11-6 run that put them up by five after a kill from freshman Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.). Stony Brook then went on to take the win, scoring the final point on a block from graduate student Jackie Ahlers (Stony Point, N.Y.) and senior Amy Oleksiej (Coram, N.Y.).

Stony Brook never trailed in the second game, breaking a 10-10 tie with five straight points, including another ace from Sweany who finished with six in the match. The Seawolf defense did not allow more than three consecutive points to the Stags the rest of the way as SBU built a 2-0 lead.

In what turned out to be the final game of the night, Sweany served up another pair of aces to start the game as Stony Brook jumped out to an 8-3 advantage. Fairfield pulled to within a point at 12-11, but the Seawolves slowly built a lead and pulled out to a 24-19 advantage on a kill from Ahlers. The closest the Stags could get the rest of the way was at 25-23, but SBU closed things out with five straight, getting kills from Sweany, senior Kaitlyn Deutsch (St. Louis, Mo.) and junior Gluce Nazli Dikecligil (Istanbul, Turkey).

Stony Brook will complete play at the tournament tomorrow when it plays host Seton Hall at 9:30 a.m. and Penn at 4:00 p.m.
