UMBC's Ashley Oscars recorded a game-high 15 kills with a .394 attack percentage as the Retrievers swept Stony Brook's volleyball team, 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-18), Sunday afternoon in Pritchard Gymnasium. Sophomore Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.) led the Seawolves with 11 kills. UMBC remains undefeated in conference play, improving to 14-6 overall (4-0), while Stony Brook falls to 9-12 (0-3).
A back-and-forth start to the first set resulted with Stony Brook pulling within two at 12-10 on a kill by senior Gulce Nazli Dikecligil (Istanbul, Turkey). UMBC then took control of the match, receiving kills from four different players as it went on a 4-2 run to push its lead to four. The Seawolves pulled within three at 20-17 on an ace from Dikecligil, but failed to close the gap any further as the Retrievers closed the set out on a 5-2 run.
Opening the second frame with four straight points, UMBC dominated the set early on and never relented the lead. Oscars tallied five kills while Alexandria Spaay (four blocks) and the rest of the UMBC defense held Stony Brook to a .071 attack percentage.
Stony Brook rebounded in the third set, starting off with a 7-2 run, highlighted by three kills from Nelson. UMBC slowly chipped away at the lead, eventually overtaking the Seawolves 15-14 on Sabrina Hoeks' second ace of the day. Sarah Ball then served for five straight points as the Retrievers extended their lead to 22-15 and never looked back, winning the set 25-18.
Stony Brook received double-digit digs from junior Michelle Burrola (Glendale, Ariz.) (14) and Dikecligil (10), while freshman Kelsey Sullivan (Hamilton, Va.) tallied 30 assists.
Stony Brook travels north for its next two matches, facing Maine at 7:00 p.m. on Friday and then New Hampshire at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
