Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Stony Brook University's volleyball team was swept by Binghamton, 3-0 (26-24, 25-18, 25-20), Sunday afternoon in Pritchard Gymnasium. Three different Bearcats registered double-digit kills, led by Anna Lejina's 11. With the win, Binghamton improves to 12-12 (7-1 America East) while Stony Brook falls to 11-15 (2-6).
After having a bye on Friday night, the Seawolves came out energized, opening the game on a 5-0 run behind the serving of sophomore Jeanette Gibbs (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.). Binghamton bounced back quickly, scoring four straight to pull within one on a kill by Mercedes Montford. A kill be senior Gulce Nazli Dikecligil (Istanbul, Turkey) pushed Stony Brook's lead back to two, but Binghamton answered with an 8-2 scoring streak to pull ahead 12-8. The teams then went back-and-forth trading the lead before finding themselves tied at 22 apiece. Back-to-back kills by Binghamton gave the Bearcats a two point advantage, but the Seawolves bounced right back with kills from sophomores Ashley Headen (Alexandria, Va.) and Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.). Following a Binghamton timeout, Lejina registered her fifth kill of the frame and a Stony Brook attack error eventually gave the Bearcats a 26-24 win.
The second set had a similar beginning to the first with Stony Brook opening a 6-1 lead on an ace from freshman Kelsey Sullivan (Hamtilon, Va.). Once again, Binghamton rallied back, scoring six of the next eight points. The Seawolves were able to fend off the Bearcats throughout most of the frame, maintaining their lead until a Stony Brook attack error gave Binghamton a 15-14 advantage. Binghamton would close the set out on a 10-4 run to grab a 2-0 set lead.
In the third frame, it was Stony Brook who found themselves down early as an ace from Katie Thomas put Binghamton up 7-3. The Seawolves clawed their way back into it, eventually taking the lead at 12-11 after an ace from Gibbs. Binghamton would not be denied though, as they scored four straight to seize a lead they would never give up, taking the final set 25-20.
Stony Brook will host its final two home matches of the season next weekend, starting with a match against New Hampshire on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
