Hanover, N.H. -
Poor shooting to start the second half doomed Stony Brook as it fell to Dartmouth, 59-47, in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon. Junior Kairsten Nunn (Bowie, Md) led the way for the Seawolves (1-8) with a season-high 17 points including 7-of-8 shooting from the free throw line. Sophomore Ariel Brown (Lumberton, N.J.) added a career-high 12 points. Darcy Rose led three scorers in double figures with 18 points for Dartmouth (2-5).
"I was pleased with our overall effort," head coach Michele Cherry said. "We got the stops that we needed but on the offensive end we couldn't convert. We had some breakdowns defensively and allowed them too many three-point plays."
Dartmouth led by as many as eight, 12-4 in the first half following two free throws from Brittney Smith. On the strength of eight points from Brown and seven from Nunn, Stony Brook cut the Big Green lead to 20-17 with 6:49 left in the half. The Seawolves took their first lead of the game, 21-20 after a pair of free throws from sophomore Misha Horsey (Wyncote, Pa.). But on the ensuing possession, Dartmouth re-took the lead on a layup from Besty Williams.
After a Horsey three tied the score at 24, Brown stole the ball at the top of the key and drove to the basket for a layup for her 10th point of the first half and a Seawolves' 26-24 advantage. Smith also had 10 points and Dartmouth's final basket as the score was tied at 26, going into the break.
Dartmouth outscored Stony Brook 13-2 to start the second half while taking its biggest lead of the game, 39-28. Baskets from Nunn and freshman Destiny Jacobs (Glen Burnie, Md.) cut the lead down to seven, 41-34 but after getting within five twice, Dartmouth stretch its lead back up to nine after two free throws from Margaret Smith.
But the Seawolves wouldn't go away quietly, getting two free throws from Nunn and a layup off a turnover and steal from sophomore Kirsten Jeter (Elmont, N.Y.), making the score 49-44. The Big Green answered on the next possession with a three-point play from Rose with 3:46 left in the half.
Once again, Stony Brook got within five, 52-47 but another three-point play from Rose extended Dartmouth's lead back to 55-47.
Nunn's team-high 17 points earned her America East Player of the Game honors. Horsey and Jeter each chipped in with seven points.
Stony Brook has a quick turnaround and faces Manhattan on Monday evening. Tip-off against Jaspers is scheduled for 7 pm.
