Zach Rosenbaum hurled a complete game seven-hitter to lead the Charlotte 49ers to a 6-1 victory over the Stony Brook University baseball team on Saturday afternoon at R&M Hayes Stadium. The second game of the doubleheader was canceled due to weather. The teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at Noon. Stony Brook falls to 4-3 with the loss while the 49ers improve to 12-2.
Rosenbaum allowed one walk to go with the seven hits and struck out five batters on 109 pitches.
Stony Brook scored in the top of the first on three hits. Junior Brian Witkowski (Lindenhurst, N.Y) singled, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a single by sophomore Mike Stephan (Patchogue-Medford, N.Y.). Rosenbaum left the bases loaded in the fifth, and allowed only two other runners to second the rest of the way.
Charlotte came back for the eighth time this season by scoring a run in the first inning, four in the second and one more in the third.
Aaron Bray drew a walk to lead off the bottom half of inning one, advanced to third on a single by Shayne Moody and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brad McElroy.
The four runs in the second were unearned. Alex Burt reached on an infield error, and with two outs in the inning, Charlotte drew a walk and had three hits, including two doubles to score the runs. Ross Steedley drove in Burt with an RBI single, while Bray drove in Corey Shaylor with an RBI double and Moody brought home Steedley and Bray with his two-RBI double.
McElroy led off the third inning with a double, while Alan Parks knocked him home with an infield single.
SBU senior starter Tom Koehler (New Rochelle, N.Y.) settled after that point, allowing just two baserunners through the next three innings. Sophomore Mike Gionesi (Branford, CT.) allowed a walk and a hit batter in his two innings, striking out two 49ers in his appearance.
Koehler took his first loss of the season (2-1). In six innings, he was only charged with a pair of earned runs. He gave up eight hits and two walks, striking out two.
Moody was a perfect 3-for-3 on the day, drawing a walk. Parks finished with two hits and has been retired only once in his last seven plate appearances. Seven different Seawolves had a hit for Stony Brook.
