Hammond, LA. -
Junior Mike Errigo (Bayside, N.Y.) struck out 10 in 6.1 innings to pick up the victory and junior Jeremy Nowak (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) went 2-for-5 with two RBI to lead the Stony Brook University baseball team to a 5-3 victory over the Southeastern Louisiana Lions on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field. Stony Brook goes to 4-2 with the victory while the Lions fall to 6-6.
Errigo (1-1) was brilliant for SBU, allowing just a run and six hits in his 6.1 innings of work to pick up his first victory of the season. Junior Chad Rebecca (Prospect, Ill.) added two hits and a RBI for the Seawolves.
Stony Brook jumped on top early, scoring two runs in the second. The Seawolves put two runners on with one out to bring up sophomore Chris Maier (Farmingdale, N.Y.) who smacked a RBI single to center and then advanced to third on a Lions error. Freshman Chad Marshall (Paris, Ontario) followed with a run-scoring single to give Stony Brook a 2-0 advantage.
Rebecca added to the lead in the third with a two-out RBI single, driving in Nowak who had reached on a single to left to begin the inning. The Seawolves added two more in the fourth, as sophomore Mike Stephan (Patchogue-Nedford, N.Y.) and freshman Nick Thode (Huntington Station, N.Y.) reached after the first two Seawolves were retired. Nowak then came up and drove a two-run double to left-center to make it 5-0 Stony Brook.
Errigo cruised through the first 6.0 innings, giving up no runs and four hits. But the Lions put two runners on to begin the seventh against Errigo who struck out the next hitter but then gave way to sophomore Jordan Purington (Westbrook, Maine). Purington gave up an RBI groundout to Cass Hargis, cutting the Seawolves lead to 5-1 but then got Xavier Qualls to groundout to end the threat.
Purington hurled a scoreless eighth but the Lions would not go down quietly, bringing the tying run to the plate in the ninth against Nowak who came into begin the inning. Nowak allowed the first two Lions to reach and Hargis then drove in Southeastern Louisiana's second run with an infield single.
Nowak retired the next hitter and got the second out when Ty Summerlin grounded into a fielder's choice but a Seawolves error on the play allowed Will Lefever to score. Brandon Street then came up representing the tying run but Nowak got him to fly to left to end the game.
The Seawolves return to action on Saturday, March 15, traveling to take on Charlotte at Noon.
