Stony Brook University's swimming & diving teams competed at the 2009 Orange Bowl Swim Classic on Saturday afternoon as a part of their annual winter training trip. The Seawolves had a number of top-ten finishes in the meet, led by freshman Deirdre Leong (Forest Hills, N.Y.) who had three.
Leong's top finish came in the 50-meter backstroke, where she took sixth in a time of 33.68. She took ninth in the 100-meter backstroke (1:13.48) and was a member of the 200-meter medley relay team that finished sixth as well. Joining her in that relay were sophomore Anastasiya Kiryushkina (Moscow, Russia), freshman Stephanie Gross (Fairport, N.Y.) and freshman Darcy Heuser (Centerville, Ohio).
Heuser also finished sixth in the 100-meter butterfly (1:09.43) while Kiryushkina took sixth in the 50-meter breaststroke (36.68).
Freshman Ian Francis (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) had Stony Brook's top-two finishes on the day, taking third in both the 50-meter breaststroke (31.00) and 100-meter breaststroke (1:08.35). Not far behind Francis in the 100-meter was freshman Mark Anderson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) who took seventh (1:12.74).
Stony Brook had the fifth-fastest swimmers in both the men's and women's 100-meter freestyle. Freshman Sean Conway (Oakdale, N.Y.) completed the men's race in 55.63, while junior Rebecca Sayles (Calgary, Alberta) finished in 1:02.02. The duo also competed in the 200-meter IM, in which Sayles touched eighth (2:33.92) and Conway ninth (2:25.36).
The Seawolves next meet will be at home on January 17th against Lafayette.
