West Hartford, Conn. -
Senior Harmonie Calinda (Huntington, N.Y.) and junior Ashley Headen (Alexandria, Va.) both recorded double-doubles as the Stony Brook volleyball team swept Hartford, 3-0 (25-9, 26-24, 25-15), in the team's conference opener on Friday night. The Seawolves trailed only twice all match as they improved their record to 9-8 (1-0 America East) while Hartford dropped to 6-11 (0-1 America East).
Hartford dug itself into an early hole, committing seven errors to start the match, which helped give Stony Brook an early 9-0 advantage. Overall, the Hawks committed 13 errors in the set, hitting -.250 as a team, as SBU need only seven kills to cruise to a 25-9 victory.
Stony Brook's offense picked it up in the second set, led by Calinda and senior Lisa Doremus (Glendale, Ariz.), who both connected on five kills. While Stony Brook was ahead for almost the entire set, it never managed to build a lead bigger than four points. With the Seawolves ahead 17-13, Hartford went on a 7-4 run to pull within one at 21-20. Following a kill from senior Lindsey Gordon (N. Patchogue, N.Y.), which pushed the Seawolves lead to two, the Hawks scored three-straight points, including consecutive aces by Michelle Cordell, to pull in front 23-22. With the score 24-23, Hartford was one point away from knotting the match at one set each, but a kill from Headen followed by Hartford error and a Stony Brook block gave the Seawolves a 2-0 set lead.
Similar to the first set, Stony Brook jumped out to an early lead in the third set. The only difference was it was Stony Brook's offense that led the charge. Headen recorded a match-high seven kills and accounted for four of SBU's final six points of the match. As a team, the Seawolves hit .429, committing just three errors.
Stony Brook's next match is not until October 11th, when they return home for the first time since September 1st to host New Hampshire. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m.
