St. John's Game Notes
Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Stony Brook University's women's basketball team looks to bounce back from a 68-43 loss to Princeton in Friday night's season opener when it takes on St. John's on Sunday. This is the first time since 2006 that the Seawolves have hosted the Red Storm. SBU will be looking to pick up its first victory over St. John's since the 65-51 win in December of 2001. Stony Brook is 2-8 all-time against schools from the Big East with its only other victory coming against Providence in 2004. Sunday's contest will be broadcast locally on WUSB 90.1 FM with Jeff Bernstein and Sue Serafini announcing. The game can also be followed via gametracker and live video stream at goseawolves.org.
Scouting St. John's
Coming off a 19-15 season and a trip to the third round of the WNIT, St. John's enters its 2009-10 campaign with four returning starters. The Red Storm are led by Big East Freshman of the Year Da'Shena Stevens. The 6-1 forward averaged 11.9 ppg and 6.6 rpg in her first season.
The one starter St. John's did lose to graduation was Monique McLean, who scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds against the Seawolves last season.
With a pair of veteran guards in senior Kelly McManmon and junior Sky Lindsay running the show, St. John's is protective of it's possessions, committing just 15.3 turnovers per game last season. The Red Storm are also dangerous from beyond the arc, led by McManmon who ranked 15th in the nation last season with 2.7 three-point field goals per game.
