Box Score
Loudonville, N.Y. -
Freshman Robbie Campbell's (Delta, B.C.) goal with 1:02 left broke a 7-7 tie and lifted the Stony Brook men's lacrosse team to an 8-7 win over Siena. Sophomore Jordan McBride (New Westminster, B.C.) added three goals as the Seawolves won their second straight to square their record at 2-2.
"This was a very good win for our team," said Stony Brook head coach Rick Sowell. "We told the guys that this would be a dog fight and that is exactly what happened. I am very proud of our team; we made the plays that we had to have to win on the road against a good Siena team."
In a game that was tight the entire way, but one in which Siena never held a lead, the Saints' Bryan Neufeld scored on a man-up opportunity with 7:16 left in the game to tie things at 7-7. Stony Brook had a chance to gain the lead right back after winning the face-off, but junior Steven Waldeck's (Levittown, N.Y.) shot hit the post. The Saints also had some scoring chances, but junior Charlie Paar (Huntington, N.Y.) turned aside three shots and Nick Maturro (West Islip, N.Y.) deflected a shot away from the SBU goal when Paar was caught outside the crease. The final save came with 1:54 left, giving Stony Brook control of the ball. The Seawolves took the ball down the field, getting it to Campbell who came in on goal from the right side and unleashed a shot that squeezed past the Siena goalie. Siena won the final face-off and got off a pair of shots in the final minute of play, but Paar stopped both to preserve the victory.
McBride got Stony Brook going with a goal at the 6:03 mark of the first quarter. Siena tied it up a minute and a half later on a score from Chris Zarins, but sophomore Kevin Crowley (New Westminster, B.C.) answered with just 13 second left in the quarter to put SBU back on top.
Siena eventually tied it at 3-3 on two more goals from Zarins, but sophomore Timmy Trenkle (Commack, N.Y.) and McBride closed out the first half with goals for Stony Brook that gave the Seawolves a 5-3 advantage at the half. For McBride, it was his 10th goal of the season.
Siena tied it again midway through the third on a score by Kenny Mazzone, but Campbell scored his first of the game a minute and a half later to put Stony Brook back on top, 6-5. The Saints tied the score once again, the fourth tie of the game to that point, with 5:30 left in the third that sent the game into the fourth quarter all knotted up at six.
Six minutes into the final quarter freshman Kyle Belton (Langley, B.C.) took a feed from Crowley to score his fifth goal of the season that put Stony Brook back on top, but less than two minutes later Neufeld got his goal that set up the final frantic minutes of the contest.
McBride finished with three goals and an assist to lead Stony Brook with four points. Campbell added two goals and an assist, while Waldeck picked up seven ground balls to lead SBU in that category. Zarins was the only player to score more than once for Siena, finishing with a game-high four goals.
Stony Brook will return home for its next game, hosting Delaware on Saturday, March 14 at 1:00 p.m. in LaValle Stadium.
