Cambridge, Mass. -
Senior Michael Tansey (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and freshman Tyler Johnson (Chatsworth, Calif.) were named the America East Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the conference office announced on Monday after helping the Stony Brook University baseball team to a win over No. 11 Virginia and a series victory over UMBC. Johnson was also named the ECAC Pitcher of the Week.
It is the second America East Player of the Week award this season for Tansey, who hit .429 (9-for-21) in six games last week in addition to driving in six runs. He knocked in a run in the Seawolves 6-2 win over UVa and then tallied two hits and an RBI in SBU's 8-0 win over UMBC on Friday. Tansey then went 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored in a 9-6 win over the Retrievers during the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. He capped the series by going 2-for-5, including a home run, in the Seawolves' 11-5 victory in Saturday's second game.
Johnson, who was named America East Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season as well, hurled a three-hit shutout to lead the Seawolves to the 8-0 victory over UMBC, striking out seven and walking two. He retired the last 10 batters he faced to earn in the win in the seven-inning game. He also picked up the victory against Virginia and is currently tied for second in the America East in victories (four) and strikeouts (33).
The Seawolves return to action on Saturday, traveling to take on the Binghamton Bearcats. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is set for 12 p.m.
