Final Stats
Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Freshman Meghan Gilley (Macungie, Pa.) scored the game-tying goal in the 66th minute but Courtney Collins tallied the game-winner with 2:40 remaining in the first overtime to send the Providence Friars to a 3-2 victory over the Stony Brook University women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon at LaValle Stadium. Stony Brook falls to 0-5-1 with the loss while Providence improves to 4-2-1.
Providence had taken a 2-1 lead on a Jill Camburn goal just over three minutes into the second half but the Seawolves responded with Gilley's goal to tie the game 2-2. Sophomore Dominique Adamo (Ramsey, N.Y.) created the scoring chance as she stole the ball from a Providence defender and passed it to Gilley, who had just been inserted into the game as a substitute. Gilley then knocked the ball into the lower right corner of the net from 10 yards out.
It was the second game-tying goal of the season for Gilley, who scored the equalizer on Aug. 30 against No. 23 Rutgers. Named America East Player of the Game, Gilley's two goals lead the team.
Neither team was able to reach the back of the net for the rest of regulation as the game went to overtime. It was the second straight overtime contest for both Stony Brook and Providence.
The Friars nearly won the game in the opening minutes of overtime but Taylor Bartini's open shot from six yards out sailed over the net. Providence generated another solid scoring chance minutes later but Bartini's header off a cross from Mary Vercollone went just wide.
Senior goalkeeper Marisa Viola (Cutchogue, N.Y.) made a splendid save to keep the game tied just seconds later as she dove to her right to corral a shot from Camburn. But Collins then came through with the game-winner as she launched a shot from 25 yards out into the upper right corner of the net.
Providence took a 1-0 advantage in sixth minute as Kate DelCiampo took a shot from 20 yards out that deflected off a Seawolves defender and into the lower right corner of the goal. But Stony Brook would rally back as sophomore Alexis Lindo (York, Pa.) set up sophomore Colleen McKenna (Manorville, N.Y.) for her first goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1 in the 36th minute.
The goal came after Lindo played a cross in from the right side to McKenna, who trapped the ball on the left side of the six-yard box and put it past Providence goalkeeper Ashley Lewis. The assist was the first career point for Lindo.
Viola finished the game with 10 saves for the Seawolves, who took five shots on the day. Lewis finished the contest with one save.
The Seawolves return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 16, traveling to take on Yale. Game is set for 7 p.m.
