Final Stats

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Junior Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.) tallied a match-high 15 kills and the Stony Brook University volleyball team held the New Hampshire Wildcats to a .147 hitting percentage on its way to 3-0 (25-11, 25-22, 26-24) victory on Friday night at Pritchard Gymnasium. With the victory, the Seawolves improve to 9-15 overall and 4-4 in the America East. The Seawolves are now in sole possession of fourth place in the America East with four regular season matches remaining. The top four teams qualify for the 2010 America East tournament.

Senior Jeanette Gibbs (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) registered a match-high 14 digs while sophomore Greta Strenger (Woodbury, Minn.) tied a season-high with 13 digs. Junior Kelsey Sullivan (Hamilton, Va.) and sophomore Corinne Perry (Northport, N.Y.) orchestrated the Seawolves offense, tallying, 20 and 13 assists, respectively.

The first set was close early, with the Seawolves leading by just one, 9-8, following a kill from Sara Heldman. But the Seawolves then went on a 9-2 run to take a 19-10 lead and force a UNH timeout. Nelson and senior Ashley Headen (Alexandria, Va.) each had two kills in the run.

New Hampshire got a kill from Lauren Laquerre coming out of the timeout before the Seawolves scored six straight points to take a 1-0 lead. Nelson had seven kills in the opening set for Stony Brook, which hit .393.

Set two was close most of the way, with Stony Brook taking its largest lead of the set, 15-11, on a service ace from Headen. The Wildcats closed within 18-17 on a Seawolves error but Destiny Tolliver followed with a service error to give SBU a two-point lead.

UNH again closed with one at 23-22 on a Laquerre kill but Nelson answered with a kill before Perry closed it out with an ace. Nelson tallied seven kills in the second set as well.

New Hampshire took an early 5-2 advantage in set three and held on to that lead until a Headen service ace put the Seawolves up 13-12. Neither team would lead by more than two until a Justine Elliot kill gave the Wildcats an 18-16 lead.

But the Seawolves regrouped following a timeout, scoring five straight points to take a 21-18 advantage. New Hampshire rallied to go in front, 24-23, but Headen answered with a kill and Slaughter then followed with a kill of her own to put Stony Brook within a point of winning the match.

Headen closed out the match for the Seawolves with her third ace of the match. Headen and Slaughter each had seven kills for the Seawolves and Strenger added five. Laquerre led New Hampshire with 15 kills.

The Seawolves return to action on Sunday, hosting Providence at Pritchard Gymnasium. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
