Baltimore, Md. - Junior Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.) tallied a game-high 18 kills and the Stony Brook University women's volleyball hit a season-best .346 on its way to a 3-0 (25-22, 27-25, 25-21) victory over the UMBC Retrievers at the RAC Arena on Friday night. With the win, Stony Brook improves to 7-12 overall and 2-1 in the America East.

Nelson hit .333 for the match as she totaled double-digit kills for the ninth time in 10 matches. Senior Jeanette Gibbs (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) led the Seawolves with 11 digs while freshman Hailee Herc (Eden, N.Y.) registered nine kills and nine digs.

Stony Brook jumped to a 5-1 lead in the opening set behind two early kills from Nelson. UMBC rallied to tie it at 11 before taking a 14-13 advantage on an SBU attack error. The Seawolves scored six of the next eight points to take a 19-16 lead before UMBC scored four straight to go up 20-19.

But, then, with the match tied at 22, Stony Brook scored three straight points to take a 1-0 lead. Nelson had six kills in the opening set for the Seawolves, who hit .556.

SBU grabbed a 10-5 lead in set two but the Retrievers answered with a 13-7 spurt to take an 18-17 advantage. UMBC got within one point of winning the set at 24-22 but Stony Brook tied it on an UMBC attack error and a Nelson kill. An ace from senior Ashley Headen (Alexandria, Va.) made it 25-24 before UMBC tied it on an Ali Loynachan kill.

But the Seawolves responded with a kill from freshman Evann Slaughter (Clinton, Md.) before closing the set on a Nelson kill. The third set was close all the way as neither team took more than a two-point lead until an ace from sophomore Corinne Perry (Northport, N.Y.) gave the Seawolves a 21-18 lead.

Nelson followed with a kill to push the Stony Brook lead to four and UMBC got no closer than three the rest of the way as the Seawolves completed the sweep. Herc closed the match with a kill.

The Seawolves return to action next weekend, hosting Albany and Binghamton.
