Stony Brook University's women's basketball team trailed by just seven points at halftime but the George Mason Patriots out-scored the Seawolves 22-6 over the first seven minutes of the second half on its way to a 74-48 victory on Thursday night at the Patriot Center.
Senior Kirsten Jeter (Elmont, N.Y.) scored 11 points to go along with seven rebounds for Stony Brook (3-5), which lost its second straight game. Junior Destiny Jacobs (Glen Burnie, Md.) added nine points and 10 rebounds.
Stony Brook trailed 30-23 at the half and Jeter scored the first hoop of the second half but the Patriots then went on a 15-2 run to take a 45-27 lead. Jeter ended the run with an inside hoop but the Patriots scored the next 13 points to put the game away.
Brittany Poindexter scored a game-high 21 points for the Patriots (3-5) while Talia Moton added 17. The Patriots scored 29 points off 23 Stony Brook turnovers.
GMU jumped to a 6-2 lead to open the game but the Seawolves then went on a 7-0 run to take a three-point lead. Stony Brook held George Mason without a point for almost four minutes during the run.
The lead exchanged hands four more times in the early going before Jacobs scored on a put-back and sophomore Gerda Gatling (Woodbridge, Va.) got free for an easy lay-up off a pass from sophomore Juanita Cochran (Saginaw, Mich.) to give SBU a 15-12 lead midway through the half. Stony Brook scored eight second-chance points over the first 10 minutes of the game.
George Mason answered with an 8-0 run over the next three minutes before Jacobs ended the spurt with another put-back hoop. Sophomore Amanda Corona (North Hollywood, Calif.) then hit a free throw and junior Whitney Davis (Muskegon, Mich.) followed with a jumper from the elbow to tie it at 20 with five minutes remaining.
But the Patriots scored 10 of the next 12 points and went into the break with a seven-point lead. The Seawolves shot 40 percent in the first half.
Stony Brook continues its five-game road trip on Saturday, heading to Washington, D.C. to take on George Washington. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
