Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Stony Brook University's women's soccer team out-shot the Fairfield Stags, 15-10, but the Stags scored three second-half goals to defeat the Seawolves, 3-0, on Thursday night at LaValle Stadium. The game was delayed an hour and a half at the start because of lightning in the area.
The Seawolves (0-7-1) dominated the first half, out-shooting the Stags, 9-1. Sophomore Taryn Schoenbeck (Newark, Del.) ripped out a shot from 20 yards out in the 19th minute but Fairfield keeper Kelly Boudreau was there to make one of her five first-half saves.
Junior Holly Razzaghi (Bloomsburg, Pa.) nearly gave the Seawolves the lead in the 26th minute but her shot from the top of the 18-yard box was tipped just over the crossbar by Boudreau. SBU's best scoring opportunity of the half came minutes later as sophomore Sa'sha Kershaw (Baltimore, Md.) found freshman Tess Hagenlock (Bozeman, Montana) free in the middle of the penalty area. But Hagenlock's shot sailed high.
Neither team was able to generate any scoring chances in the opening minutes of the second half until Hagenlock sent a cross that deflected off the hands of Boudrau to Razzaghi, who collected the ball on the left side and fired just wide. The Stags (4-3-0) jumped on top in the 67th minute as Elise Hemmer sent a ball down the right sideline to Shannon Fay, who sent it across the six-yard box. Spenser Allaway then slid just in front of Stony Brook freshman goalkeeper Chelsea Morales (Temecula, Calif.) and touched it into the net.
The Stags added an insurance goal in the 79th minute on a score from Jac Ley, who received the ball wide open in front of the net off a deflected pass from Jasmin Corniel. Ley added her second goal of the game in the final seconds of the contest.
Morales made five saves for the Seawolves, who held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Boudreau made eight stops in net for Fairfield.
The Seawolves return to action on Sunday, hosting Manhattan in their final non-conference contest of the season. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
