About the Game: In search of its first victory of the 2011-12 campaign, the Stony Brook University women's basketball team travels to take on the Iona Gaels. It will be the second consecutive MAAC opponent to open the season for the Seawolves, who dropped a 42-34 decision at Fairfield in the season-opener. Friday's game will begin a stretch in which the Seawolves play four games in eight days.
Meet the Seawolves: SBU returns 10 letterwinners - four seniors and six juniors- from last season. Junior Sam Landers (Springfield, Va.) is Stony Brook's leading returning scorer at 9.2 points per game. Senior point guard Misha Horsey (Wyncote, Pa.) returns after missing all but three games due to injury last year.
Scouting Iona: Iona enters off a 66-53 win at Bryant on Tuesday night. The Gaels hosted the Iona Tip-Off Tournament to open the season, beating North Carolina A&T in the first contest before losing to Villanova in the title game. The Gaels are led by senior forward Kristina Ford, a preseason All-MAAC first team selection and a All-MAAC Third Team pick a season ago. Ford averaged 12.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game in 2010-11 and is averaging 19.0 points per contest through the first three games. Senior guard Suzi Fregosi led Iona with 16 points and seven assists in the victory over Bryant on Tuesday. Freshman Damika Martinez added 13 points and six rebounds and is averaging 11.3 points per game over her first three contests. The Gaels were picked fifth in the MAAC preseason coaches poll.
2011-12 Season Preview
Stony Brook University women's basketball enters the first season of the Beth O'Boyle era in 2011-12. O'Boyle has 12 years of collegiate coaching experience and comes to Stony Brook following four years at Canisius College, where she served as the associate head women's basketball coach for the past two seasons.
O'Boyle returns an experience squad that features four seniors and six juniors. She also welcomes five newcomers which is comprised of three freshmen and two transfers.
Backourt
5 returning, 2 New, 1 Lost
O'Boyle will lean heavily on the experience of fifth-year senior Misha Horsey, who missed all but three games last season due to injury. Entering last season, the Seawolves floor leader led active America East players with 264 assists and in 2009-10 she was first in the conference in assist/turnover ratio (1.6).
Also shouldering much of the load in the Seawolves backcourt will be senior Tamiel Murray and junior Sam Landers. Murray made 20 starts last season, averaging 31.7 minutes per game. She led the Seawolves in assists 13 times and was fourth in the America East in steals per game.
Landers started 27 games last season after Horsey went down with the injury and is Stony Brook's leading returning scorer at 9.2 points per game.
Also pushing for time in the backcourt this season will be juniors Amanda Corona and Dani Klupenger. Corona appeared in all 30 games last year and made eight starts. Klupeneger appeared in 21 games off the bench last year and proved to be a spark plug off the bench including a 14-point performance at New Hampshire.
O'Boyle also welcomes two highly touted newcomers to the fold in Miranda Jenkins and Natalie Myers. A four-team first team All-Conference selection at Eastern Guilford High School in Gibsonville, N.C., Jenkins was third in school history in scoring (1880 points) and fourth in rebounding (636 rebounds). As a senior she was named Greensboro News & Record All-Area Player of the Year and was named All-State by NCPreps.com.
Myers comes from Clackamas, Ore., where she was a two-time first team all-league selection and three-time captain. A McDonald's All-American nominee as a senior, she led Clackamas to a No. 2 state ranking.
Frontcourt
5 Returning, 3 New, 2 Lost
The Seawolves will have big shoes to fill in the frontcourt following the graduation of forward Kirsten Jeter. A second team All-America East second team selection last season, Jeter led SBU in scoring (14.1 per game) and rebounding (7.1 per game).
Helping to fill Jeter's shoes in the Stony Brook frontcourt this year will be senior center Destiny Jacobs, who started 23 games in 2010-11 and posted career-highs in scoring (8.2 per game) and rebounds (6.8).
The Seawolves also return senior Whitney Davis and junior Talisha Bridges, who figure to see a lot of time at the three this year.
A transfer from Muskegon CC, Davis made 16 starts in her first year at Stony Brook. Davis provided instant scoring for the Seawolves, scoring 13 points in 13 minutes against Old Dominion in addition to going for 19 points at Vermont.
Hampered for much of 2010-11 by injury, Bridges still appeared in 23 games in her first year with the Seawolves after transferring from New Orleans. Bridges made nine starts last season and the Seawolves will look for more contributions from a healthy Bridges this season.
Also returning in the Stony Brook frontcourt are juniors Gerda Gatling and Taylor Burner.
One of the Sewolves most athletic players, Gatling averaged 12.5 minutes per contest in a reserve role last season. Burner appeared in 28 games off the bench in 2010-11 and will give SBU additional size up front.
O'Boyle will bring two newcomers into the fold in the frontcourt in Jessica Previlon and Kellie Krueger. A junior college transfer from Monroe College in the Bronx, Previlon led the Lady Monarchs to the 2011 NJCAA Division II women's basketball national title. O'Boyle will look to the athletic Previlon to be a big help on the boards.
Krueger comes from Wilsonville, Ore., where she was a first team 5A All-State selection as a senior. The 2011 conference player of the year, she averged 15.3 points and 11.2 rebounds per game.
O'Boyle will be without the service of transfer Sabre Proctor this season. Proctor transferred to Stony Brook from North Carolina A&T and will sit out this season due to NCAA transfer rules. She will have three years of eligibility remaining when she returns to the court next season.
Proctor appeared in 20 games for North Carolina A&T last season including three starts. She averaged 18.0 minutes per contest and averaged 7.0
