Final Stats

Lawrenceville, N.J. - Stony Brook University's women's basketball team trailed by just one at halftime and five with 7:30 left but the Rider Broncs pulled away late for a 53-41 victory over the Seawolves on Tuesday at Alumni Gym. Senior Whitney Davis (Muskegon, Mich.) led SBU with 10 points and seven rebounds.

"We battled again tonight but we just didn't execute well enough down the stretch to beat a very good basketball team in Rider," Stony Brook head coach Beth O'Boyle said.

The Seawolves (1-6) trailed 39-30 midway through the second half but hoops from freshman Kellie Krueger (Wilsonville, Ore.) and senior Tamiel Murray (Teaneck, N.J.) cut the Rider lead to 39-34 with less than eight minutes left.

The Broncs (4-3) pushed the lead back to nine on a jumper from MyNeshia McKenzie before a jumper from junior Gerda Gatling (Woodbridge, Va.) brought Stony Brook within 43-36 with four minutes to go in the game.

But McKenzie scored an inside hoop on Rider's next possession and Sironda Chambers followed with a lay-in and SBU got no closer than nine the rest of the way.

Junior Jessica Previlon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added six points and seven rebounds and Krueger had six points and three boards. McKenzie led Rider with 11 points and 15 rebounds while Alyssa Parsons chipped in with 11 points.

The Seawolves held the Broncs to 29.6 percent shooting in the first half but Rider shot 40.7 percent in the second half.

The Broncs scored the first seven points of the game but the Seawolves then held Rider scoreless over the next six minutes. Stony Brook scored six straight points during that stretch, all by Davis.

Chambers broke the Rider drought with two free throws but the Seawolves scored 11 of the next 13 points to take a 17-11 lead with under seven minutes to go in the first half. Junior Dani Klupenger (Aurora, Ore.) capped the run with a three.

Stony Brook led 21-15 with five minutes left following a jumper from senior Destiny Jacobs (Glen Burnie, Md.) but the Broncs scored the final seven points of the half to take a 22-21 lead into the break.

The Broncs opened the second half strong, going on a 12-4 run over the first 6:30 to take a 34-25 lead. Stony Brook scored the next three points before McKenzie converted a three-point play to push the Rider lead back to nine.

The Seawolves return to action on Thursday, hosting LIU at 7 p.m. It will be the first of three Stony Brook contests that will be televised live on Optimum Local Channel 118.
