Women's lacrosse downed by No. 18/20 UMass

March 12, 2011

Final Stats

The Stony Brook women's lacrosse team suffered a 20-13 loss to Massachusetts despite four goals and an assist from freshman Kaila Gottlick (Madison, Conn.).

The Seawolves slip to 2-3 on the season while the nationally ranked Minutewomen (18th in the media poll, 20th in the coaches' poll) improve to 6-0.

Gottlick got the Seawolves off on the right foot with a goal 1:26 into the game, but the powerful UMass offense scored seven unanswered goals, including three within a span of 54 seconds. Alyssa Cardillo (Farmingdale, N.Y.) had two goals to cut the deficit to five, 8-3, but UMass responded with five more tallies as it led at halftime 14-4.

Stony Brook came out and scored two quick goals, one from Gottlick, the other from  Abby Ford (Baltimore, Md.) assisted by Gottlick, but UMass kept answering every Seawolves comeback. Melissa Cook (Bay Shore, N.Y.) scored back-to-back goals, and Kerry Kresse (Setauket, N.Y.) notched another to get within six, 18-12, but it wasn't enough to surpass the Minutewomen.

Gottlick finished with a team-high five points, connecting on four of seven shot attempts. Cardillo, Ford and Cook each had two goals, and Courtney Bertolone (Farmingville, N.Y.) and Victoria Cable (Oakton, Va.) each notched a goal as well. Bertolone led the team with five ground balls.

Stony Brook will return to action Wednesday, March 16, at Marist at 3 p.m.
