Carmona, Johnson, Rakkar earn All-Academic honors

June 14, 2011

Cambridge, Mass. - Stony Brook University's baseball team had a conference best three student-athletes named to the America East All-Academic team, announced by the conference office on Tuesday. Sophomores William Carmona (Hempstead, N.Y.) and Jasvir Rakkar (Brampton, Ontario) as well as junior Tyler Johnson (Chatsworth, Calif.) each earned a spot on the 10-member team.

The 2011 America East Player of the Year, Carmona hit .357 and set school records for hits (80) and doubles (27) with the doubles mark ranking third in the nation. Carmona led the America East in five offensive categories including batting average, slugging percentage (.580) and hits.

Carmona became the first America East player since 1998 to be named a first team All-American last week and was also selected to the 2011 District I Capital One Academic All-District first team. A Business Management major, Carmona holds a GPA of 3.30.

Rakkar appeared in 16 games in relief this going, going 2-0 with a 3.70 ERA in 24.1 innings. He also posted a 3.59 GPA as a business management major.

A two-time All-America East first team selection, Johnson went 9-3 with a 2.30 ERA in 13 starts. This is the second time on the All-Academic team for Johnson, who was also named to the 2011 District I Capital One Academic All-District first team.

The 2010 America East Scholar Athlete for baseball, Johnson allowed just 63 hits in 78.1 innings and held opponents to a .222 batting average. A History major, Johnson has a 3.73 GPA.

For the third straight year, America East has chosen the All-Academic teams using CoSIDA's Academic All-America program as a model. Student-athletes worthy of consideration are nominated by member sports information directors and voted on by a committee of SIDs, academic advisers and faculty representatives from all nine member institutions.

All-Academic squads for team sports are based on the number of athletes that participate in a contest at one time but can be more if there is a tie in voting. To be nominated for the distinction, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve for their team and participate in at least 50 percent of their team's games or competitions.

In the classroom, student-athletes must have a 3.30 GPA and have completed at least one calendar year at their institution. Freshmen are not eligible for consideration.
