2011-12 Non-Conference Schedule
Stony Brook, N.Y. -
First-year Stony Brook University head women's basketball coach Beth O'Boyle has announced the Seawolves 2011-12 non-conference schedule, which includes games against three teams that advanced to the postseason last year and six home games at Pritchard Gymnasium. The schedule is highlighted by a match-up the day after Thanksgiving with the Ohio State Buckeyes, who advanced to the Sweet 16 last season.
"We are excited about the challenges that our non-conference games present," O'Boyle said. "I believe this schedule will provide us a great test against some quality teams both at home and on the road and prepare us for the rigors of the America East Conference."
Entering her first season at the helm at Stony Brook, O'Boyle and her team will go up against teams from the Big Ten, BIG EAST and Atlantic 10. The Seawolves returns 10 letter-winners from last year's squad and welcome five newcomers.
Stony Brook will open the 2011-12 campaign on Friday, Nov. 11, traveling to take on Fairfield University. The Stags went 17-13 last season.
Following a road contest against Iona (Nov. 18), the Seawolves will open their home schedule against CAA opponent George Mason on Nov. 21. Robert Morris then pays a visit to Pritchard Gymnasium the day before Thanksgiving (Nov. 23) in just the second all-time meeting between the programs.
Two days later, the Seawolves head to the Midwest to take on Ohio State (Nov. 25). The Buckeyes won their third straight Big Ten tournament title last season and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the second time in three years.
SBU takes on its second consecutive postseason opponent on Nov. 30, traveling to Fairfield, Conn. to take on Sacred Heart. The Pioneers went 19-13 in 2010-11 and advanced to the WBI.
The Seawolves then travel to take on a Rider (Dec. 6) squad that returns all 11 letter-winners from last season before returning home on Dec. 8 to face off against an LIU team that won 19 games a year ago.
Fordham will make the short 60-mile trip from the Bronx to Stony Brook on Dec. 11 as the Seawolves face the Rams, out of the Atlantic-10, for the second straight year. Following a game at Fairleigh Dickinson on Dec. 13, SBU travels to New Jersey to take on the Seton Hall Pirates from the BIG EAST on Dec. 17.
The Seawolves wrap up their non-conference schedule with home games against Morgan State (Dec. 21) and Youngstown State (Dec. 27). Morgan State was the co-regular season champion of the MEAC last season and advanced to the WNIT.
