Volleyball to host Holiday Inn Express Tournament this weekend

The Stony Brook University volleyball team welcomes Iona, Rhode Island and Kent State to Pritchard Gymnasium this weekend for the Stony Brook Holiday Inn Express Tournament. Each team will play one match on Friday and two matches on Saturday. Gametracker and live video will be available for all matches.

Seawolves News & Notes
Stony Brook opened the 2011 season at the Temple Invitational last weekend ... in the opener against the host Owls, the Seawolves rallied from a two-set deficit to send the match to a fifth set ... Stony Brook had three match points before Temple finally pulled out the match with an 18-16 victory ... senior Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.) had 19.0 points (18 kills and a career-high 21 digs) ... she was one of four Seawolves to reach double-figures in kills as junior Greta Strenger (Woodbury, Minn.) and sophomore Evann Slaughter (Clinton, Md.) each had 11 and sophomore Kaitlin Costello (Webster, N.Y.) added 10 ... there were 10 ties and four lead changes in the fifth set ... freshman Laura Hathaway (Warsaw, N.Y.) had 21 digs in her first collegiate match ... Nelson then recorded 21 kills and had 23.0 points in the four-set loss to Montana ... she also hit .308 ... Nelson had 16 kills in the four-set loss to South Carolina on Saturday ... the Seawolves hit .464 in the 25-19 second set victory.

Scouting the Opponents
Iona (1-1) opened the season at the 2011 Kristen Dickmann Invitational last weekend. The Gaels fell in four sets to St. John's in the opener before knocking off Navy in three sets. Junior libero Theresa Harvey was named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week after recording 48 digs in the two matches while sophomore outside hitter Alicja Pawelec was named to All-Tournament team after averaging 4.14 kills per set.

Kent State (3-2) enters off a five-set victory over Youngstown State on Tuesday. The Golden Flashes opened the season last weekend, going 2-2 at the SIU Edwardsville Invitational as they defeated SIU Edwardsville and Arkansas Pine-Bluff and lost to Wofford and Western Illinois. Senior Maigan Larsen leads the team with 90 kills.

Rhode Island (2-1) split a pair of matches at the Pitt Invitational on Saturday. The Rams edged Eastern Kentucky, 3-2, after losing to the host Panthers in four sets. URI opened the season with a sweep of Saint Francis (Pa.) on Friday. Kayla Wilson leads the Rams with 42 kills and is averaging 3.5 kills per set.
