Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook swimming and diving team and head coach Dave Alexander announced the 2011-12 schedule on Tuesday. The Seawolves will host a pair of dual meets this season against St. Francis (NY) on Oct. 15 and Bryant on Jan. 21.
"This is a more aggressive schedule than we've had in the past," Alexander explained. "We're going to higher level meets, and quite possibly, with smaller squads."
Stony Brook will open the 2011-12 season on Oct. 7 in West Point, N.Y. where the men's team will take on Army and Boston College, while the women will battle Army, BC and Vermont.
The following weekend, the teams return home for their first dual meet of the season on Parent's Day against St. Francis (NY) at 1 p.m. Last season, the Seawolves swept St. Francis with a 119-85 win on the men's side and a 154-50 victory on the women's side.
Stony Brook will then make the first of four trips to the state of Massachusetts when it takes on UMass on Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. The Seawolves also return to the Bay State for three scheduled events at Boston University. The first is set for Nov. 5 as the Seawolves will take on the host Terriers and Maine. Stony Brook returns to BU two weeks later on Nov. 18-20 for the Terrier Invitational, and will make one final visit on Feb. 23-26 for the America East Championship.
"We're going to be swimming against Boston University three times," Alexander added. "The BU invitational is a big meet for us and will feature many of the best teams in the Northeast."
Stony Brook will have its annual intersession training trip on Jan. 6-17 in Puerto Rico and will swim against the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez. The university built its pool in 2010 for the Caribbean Games and features "superior diving facilities" according to Alexander.
Following the intersession trip, Stony Brook will travel to Lafayette on Jan. 18, before returning home for Senior/Alumni Day against Bryant on Jan. 21 at 1 p.m. Stony Brook wraps up the regular season at Binghamton on Feb. 4 before heading to the conference championship meet three weeks later.
