Final Stats

Albany, N.Y. - Junior Evann Slaughter (Clinton, Md.) came up huge with 16 kills and five blocks, and freshman Melissa Rigo (East Northport, N.Y.) added 14 kills and 13 digs as the Stony Brook volleyball team rolled to a 3-1 (15-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-22) victory over first-place Albany Friday night at University Gym.

The Seawolves win snaps Albany's seven-match America East winning streak and improves Stony Brook's record to 3-4 in the conference. It's SB's first win over Albany in exactly five years (Oct. 26, 2007).

By the Numbers

• Rigo now has extended her double-digit kills streak to 20 straight matches to open the season. She also recorded her 10th double-double of the year.
• Slaughter has put up 10+ kills in five straight matches. 
• Freshman Shelby Tietjen (Smithtown, N.Y.) had 10 kills to just one error and hit .360 for the night.
• Freshman Nicole Vogel (Costa Mesa, Calif.) had 42 assists and 10 digs for her seventh double-double of the season. It's the fifth time she's surpassed 40 assists in a match this season.
• After allowing Albany to hit .333 in the first set, Stony Brook held the Great Danes to .095 hitting the rest of the match.

Key Moments

• Stony Brook scored the first two points of the first set on a pair of Tietjen kills, but the Great Danes controlled the set from that point going forward. A 10-1 Albany run put the Seawolves behind 11-4. Samantha Brostrom had four kills for UA during the run. 
• The second set was back and forth for a while. The Seawolves were down 19-18 when they went on a 5-0 run. Slaughter tied the set with a kill from Parkas. Strenger then picked up a kill from Vogel before the Seawolves benefitted from three consecutive UA attack errors, the last on a Rigo block that made the score 23-19. Rigo finished off the set with a big kill.
• The third set was close in the early going with a 6-6 tie, but the Seawolves busted out with an 11-5 run. Six different Seawolves recorded kills during the span, including a nice fake set kill from Vogel that made the score 15-11. Tietjen did the rest with four kills in SB's final nine points. 
• Stony Brook fell behind 4-0 in the fourth set, but the Seawolves were determined to win, and fought back to tie the match 6-6. The Seawolves took the lead for good late on the strength of five Rigo kills and a block from freshman Stephanie McFadden (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.).

Stony Brook heads to Hartford for a Sunday afternoon match with the Hawks at 1 p.m. Stony Brook will be looking for a sweep of Hartford after beating the Hawks 3-1 at home last month.
